Angrathar the Wrathgate is a barred entrance to Icecrown Citadel and is located in the northwest of Dragonblight. It is a towering wall of knife edges made from saronite.[1] During the war against the Lich King, the battle at the Wrath Gate was to be the first major blow against the Lich King, and the first in which the Alliance and Horde fought side by side instead of against each other.[1]

Chronicle3 Bolvar and Dranosh

During the war against the Lich King, the Wrath Gate was under siege by both the Alliance and the Horde forces, which set up the bases of Fordragon Hold and Kor'kron Vanguard. Respectively led by Highlord Bolvar Fordragon and Warlord Dranosh Saurfang, their forces intended to defeat the Scourge forces at the gate and to storm into Icecrown Citadel. Their campaign culminated in the disastrous Battle of Angrathar the Wrathgate, where they faced the Lich King himself, before being betrayed by Grand Apothecary Putress and his allies, who betrayed the Horde and all present by unleashing the New Plague on all the gathered forces.

As the plague spread through the battlefield, many Horde and Alliance attempted to flee. The Lich King was also in serious danger of succumbing to the plague, and only barely managed to escape back through the Wrathgate. Upon arriving from the Wyrmrest Temple, red dragons breathed flames over the battlefield itself, cleansing it of both the deadly plague and the undead, and destroyed the remaining catapults and forces loyal to Putress nearby. Following this, they once again departed and returned to the temple, leaving behind a battlefield where flowers and grass grew where their fire consumed the plague.

Following the war against the Jailer, the brothers Bronzebeard reported that the land around the Wrath Gate is now covered with ice, covering the flowers and grass that had grown after the red dragons burned the area with their flames.[1]

Major quest chain[]

A major quest chain exists involving the Alliance and Horde forces garrisoned outside the Wrath Gate. To activate this chain, several other chains in Dragonblight must be completed.

Horde
Alliance

Upon the completion of these quest chains, players can watch a cutscene depicting a great battle at the Wrath Gate. This cutscene can be repeated by speaking to Alexstrasza who can be found (along with Korialstrasz) standing on the fiery battlefield.

After completing these quests, the player receives Achievement zone icecrown 05 [Veteran of the Wrathgate].

Phasing[]

Upon completion of the Battle of Angrathar the Wrathgate, the region is largely depopulated, but those remaining are still screaming from the effects of the battle.

The Wrath Gate is crafted to look like the Helm of Domination.[2]

Notes[]

  • Red dragons burning the plague away could already be seen in A New Power in Lordaeron where two dragons burn a plagued barn near the Capital City.
  • "Angrathar the Wrathgate" is a Dragonblight subzone past the Court of Skulls. However, if one flies over the gate itself, the minimap displays it like a zone called "Angrathar the Wrath Gate".
  • The structure is actually mirrored on both sides.
