Dragon Egg HS

A dragon egg in Hearthstone.

Dragon roosts (or nests) are where the mighty dragons are known to lay their eggs. Such places are rare, and these dragons are sometimes imprisoned forcefully by mortals wanting to use their offspring as beasts of war.

Mighty chains of adamantine steel bounded the most powerful creature in all of Azeroth - Alexstrasza the Dragon Queen. Captured and ensorcelled by magiks contrived by the Dragonmaw clan, the great Dragon was kept in a constant state of weakness and pain. As the unwilling slave of the Horde, the Queen was closely watched as she laid her precious eggs. The Dragonmaw clan then raised her young to fight for the Horde - slaying the whelps when they became too powerful to be properly controlled. Constant efforts were made to break Alexstrasza's will in an attempt to master the control of more mature dragons.[1]

Despite the description of the building implying that Alexstrasza was the only dragon enslaved for her eggs, many dragon roosts could be seen in the later missions of both human and orc campaigns of Warcraft II. The Beyond the Dark Portal campaign also introduced Deathwing as a dragon voluntarily aiding the Horde of Draenor, along with his flight.

In Warcraft III the Dragon Roost was a neutral building which allowed dragons to be called forth as mercenary units. Dragons came in three sizes: whelp, drake and dragon, all of them flying units. There were originally five different colors of dragons, one for each of the main dragonflights, but The Frozen Throne added a sixth one for the Nether dragons. The colors of the dragons varied depending on the tileset of the map,[2][3] with the Nether dragon broodmother fittingly looking like a black dragon.

Blue dragons had a Frost Breath ability which slowed unit for 10 seconds like a Frost Wyrm and Bronze dragons had a Lightning Attack. Otherwise, the different colors of dragons were the same and their stats were identical.

The Blackrock clan forces in Lordaeron had several dragon roosts,[4] as well as the members of Garithos' Elite Guard.[5]

World of Warcraft[]

The original dragon roost from the Second War can still be seen in the Lifebinder's Cell in Grim Batol. There are also many other places where dragon eggs can be found, either laid voluntarily or involuntarily by the great beasts.
