Dun Algaz is the sixth mission of the Alliance campaign in Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness.

Mission briefing[]

Following their defeat at Dun Modr, the Orcs were forced to retreat south, across the Thandol Valley to a secondary outpost at Dun Algaz. Lord Lothar, hoping to push the Orcs even further back into Khaz Modan, has ordered that you destroy this newly discovered encampment. To aid you in your mission, you will be able to employ Knights who are eager to engage the Horde in glorious battle.

Objective[]

  • Destroy Dun Algaz

Background[]

Note: this account comes from the Official Strategy Guide, which features a first-person description of each mission from the game.

Milan's commander and his force was sent to destroy the orcs at Dun Algaz. Their first task was to train more peasants to plunder the nearby gold mine, for they needed its contents for their coming land raid. Their force would consist mostly of knights and ballistae, so a blacksmith was required as well as a keep. They also built cannon towers at the eastern and western openings of the base to fend off occasional raids by orcs. Although they had the research and training available for rangers, their commander was confident that knights would be more would be more suitable for the attack, and they spent much time and resources enhancing their weapon and armor.

The attacking force gathered just outside camp. It consisted of nine knights and three ballistae for heavy artillery. Scouts had located three narrow land bridges leading to the enemy; they chose the most direct route, down the center one. The knights rode in front of the slower war machines, occasionally waiting for them. As they neared the end of the land bridge, a large party of mixed Horde monsters attacked, but they were no match for their great mounted warriors. Close to the south, they spotted a few peasants from their home camp and set them to work on their own temporary barracks on the same spot, while their knights stood guard impatiently. For good measure, they also built cannon towers on both sides of the barracks and, with those completed, sent the workers back home. One of their knights was sent toward the enemy to lure them out; the Alliance ballistae made quick work of their towers after most of the defenders were dead. From that point, it was only a matter of demolition and slaughter as new knights and ballistae emerged from the makeshift barracks to replace those lost in battle. For the first time in months, all of Milan's forces were feeling hope that the Horde could be stopped, but the road to final victory would be long.[1]
