Hillsbrad is the first mission of the Alliance campaign in Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness.

Mission briefing[]

Due to your position as regional commander of the southern defense forces, Lord Terenas commands that you raise an outpost in the Hillsbrad foothills. It is rumored that Orcish marauders have been raiding coastal towns in the area, but whether these attacks are part of a greater Horde offensive is, as yet, unknown. Your outpost is to provide food and information for Alliance troops and, as such, should be a community consisting of at least four Farms. You must also construct a Barracks in order to safeguard the Hillsbrad operation.

Objectives[]

  • Build four Farms
  • Build a Barracks

Background[]

Note: this account comes from the Official Strategy Guide, which features a first-person description of each mission from the game.

The regional commander's forces had converted a large stone mansion into a town hall; the owner had graciously provided his servants and his farm to assist them as well. Their first task was to plow more farmland for the arrival of more troops, while at the same time training more servants in the ways of construction and mining. An old gold mine, nearby to the north, was reopened after the second farm was completed, and all available workers helped gather the necessary materials for building. The forest was strangely quiet that day. Their units of footmen stayed close to the hall.

As soon as the workers had extracted all they could from the mine, they immediately began construction of a barracks. They received word of coming reinforcements, so all the local peasants helped build from the outside at the same time the interior was being completed in an effort to finish before their arrival. With that task completed all that remained was to cut enough lumber for two more farms. The workers were staying near the edge of the tree line; their troops continued to closely guard their efforts. The day of completion of the farms heralded the arrival of reinforcements, who brought grim news of battles to the south and the presence of several bands of orcs nearby. With their task completed and preparations for war begun, they decided to remain where they were and enjoy the quiet until they received new orders.[1]

Forces[]

Alliance of Lordaeron
Orcish Horde

Trivia[]

  • This mission is essentially a simplified version of the first mission of the Human campaign from Warcraft: Orcs & Humans. Only 4 farms need to be built instead of 6, the map is smaller, and there are only 4 instead of 8 enemy units.
