Nythendra is the first boss of the Emerald Nightmare. Once a green dragon, Nythendra is now a living corpse, animated by the insects and corruptive powers of the nightmare. The battle revolves around the "Rot" debuff and keeping it from overwhelming the raid. While a simple encounter on normal difficulty, the fight becomes an unforgiving raid environment on heroic and mythic, with the Infest debuff able to gradually whittle players down and putting a massive strain on healers.

Background

Adventure Guide

Nythendra was once a member of the Green Dragonflight charged with guarding the world tree, Shaladrassil. When Xavius' corruption of the Nightmare consumed Shala'drassil the sleeping guardian also fell to his corruption. Nythendra is now nothing more than a skeletal version of herself, swarming in pestilence, ready to devour anyone or anything foolish enough to enter her lair.

Overview

Nythendra's Infested Breath unleashes great gouts of insects and corruption, consuming 50 Energy. When Nythendra's Energy is depleted, she collapses to the ground and Heart of the Swarm begins. Once she is fully recharged, her form coalesces and she resumes her attack.

Abilities

Stage One: The Plagued Dreamer

  • Spell nature removedisease.png  Infested — Players hit with any source of Plague damage gain a stack of Infested that inflicts 7000 Plague damage every 2 sec. This effect stacks. All applications of Infested are removed once Nythendra completes Heart of the Swarm.
  • Ability garrosh touch of yshaarj.png  Infested Mind — Nythendra's corruption takes control of all players with 10 or more stacks of Infested, causing them to periodically cast Spread Infestation. Dealing sufficient damage to the mind-controlled player will break the effect.
    • Spell deathknight necroticplague.png  Spread Infestation Interruptible — Inflicts 316875 to 333125 Plague damage to all players.
  • Spell shadow plaguecloud.png  Infested Ground — Creates an area of corruption that inflicts 100000 Plague damage every 1.5 sec to anyone within the area.
  • Spell nature insect swarm2.png  Infested Breath — Nythendra breathes clouds of poisonous insects inflicting 298593 to 313907 Plague damage every sec for 5 sec. In addition, the breath corrupts the area creating pockets of Infested Ground.
  • Spell shadow creepingplague.png  Rot — Inflicting 292500 to 307500 Plague damage to all allies within 8 yards every 3 sec for 9 sec. Upon expiring, the corruption bursts from the target creating areas of Infested Ground.
  • Ability rogue deviouspoisons.png  Volatile Rot Tank Alert — Inflicts up to 1250000 Plague damage to all allies after 8 sec sec. Allies farther from the detonation take less damage. In addition, the explosion also forms several patches of Infested Ground.
  • Inv misc monsterscales 04.png  Tail Lash — Inflicts 580125 to 609875 Physical damage to players in a cone behind her, knocking them back.

Stage Two: Heart of the Swarm

  • Spell shadow carrionswarm.png  Heart of the Swarm — At 0 Energy, Nythedra's form collapses and over 20 sec her influence periodically causes an insect to swell and cast Burst of Corruption 3 times before dying.
    • Spell shadow deathcoil.png  Burst of Corruption — Inflicts 195000 to 205000 Plague damage to all players within 8 yards. In addition, the toxic residue increases the damage of Burst of Corruption by 75% for 5 sec. This effect stacks.

Strategy

Nythendra requires 2 tanks. She will cast Volatile Rot on the tank which will cause the tank to explode and deal damage to the raid, reduced the father they are away from the tank, and spread a massive amount of rot-slime around them after a set period. The group should spread out to the sides and back of the boss, keeping the area near the entrance clear so that tanks can safely run near the entrance and drop their Volatile Rot without putting anyone else in danger.

Everyone else will periodically get hit with a debuff called Rot, which will drop a pool of slime around the player on the ground after 10 seconds. Anyone with Rot must immedietly run out towards the edge of the room to drop the Rot before running back. However, be sure to not run out of the range of the healers as the Rot will be hurting you while the debuff is up and running to the absolute edge of the arena is not necessary, just far enough away where it will not put anyone in danger. Rot will also be pulsing nature damage to anyone close-by, so players should be spread out as much as possible around the boss to avoid unnecessary damage. Nythendra also sometimes turn to face a different direction and shoots Infested Breath at a random clump of players. Players only have about 3 seconds before the cast goes off to dodge out of the way, so players must be attentive to the boss herself and not just the Rot. The breath will also drop several pools of slime in front of the boss.

Phase 2 begins when Nythendra's energy bar is depleated. She will slump down onto the ground and not move or attack, but the Rot-slimes will now begin to move on their own towards the boss. Simply dodge out of the way of the slime. While it may be tempting to simply find a safe spot and do more DPS to the inactive boss, the insects on the ground will periodically grow to massive size and begin exploding with Burst of Corruption, dealing nature damage to anyone within 8 yards. It is not uncommon for a reckless DPS to be so focused on damaging the boss that they don't notice the bug growing to large size right next to them until it is too late. Prioritize staying alive over damaging the boss as the enrage timer should not be an issue unless too many DPS die during the encounter. Once the boss absorbs all the slimes, she becomes active again and Phase 1 begins anew. Rinse and repeat until the boss goes down.

Heroic

Heroic difficulty only adds one more mechanic to the battle, but it is an impactful one. Every time a player gets hit with nature-damage (which is unavoidable due to most everyone gaining the Rot debuff at some point and taking damage from the tank's Volatile Rot), they will gain a stack of Infest. 1-4 stacks should not be a problem for a heroic-geared group, but any higher will start to put a serious strain on the healer's mana. Stacks are reset to 0 when Phase 2 ends. DPS composition is important to keep in mind here, as a group with too many melee may become a liability due to Rot pulsing nature damage immediately when it hits a player, giving multiple players 1-2 stacks of Infest if the afflicted player is not VERY quick to run away. It is advisable to set up quadrants with markers that each healer is responsible to personally take care of. Phase 2 is especially healing intensive as, in addition to people getting hit by slimes and bugs, all those abilities continue to give stacks of Infest until the very end of the phase.
