Earth giant (Draenor)

Little is known about the earth giants of Draenor (also called colossals,[1] and presumably "grom" in Orcish), other than the facts that they lived on the world of Draenor, had two eyes (formerly), and their skeleton is human-like but very large. The earth giants are the ancestors of the magnaron,[1] and by extension the gronn,[2] ogron,[1] and ogres. Whatever they were, the only signs of their passing are the Temples of the Damned built during the Second War, which were all destroyed.[2]

Temple of the Damned

Temple of the Damned in Warcraft II.

The Temple of the Damned structure was said to be "formed from petrified carcasses of the race of giants that inhabited the Orcish homeworld."[3] These structures would later be used by the Scourge[4] and the Forsaken in the Undercity.[5]

The giants were hunted by the Thunderlord clan generations ago. The skeleton of a particularly large one, rumored to be the last of its kind, served as their home in Frostfire Ridge.[6] The largest of these creatures that has ever walked Draenor was rumored to be Gorgrond itself before it died and subsequently turned into the landmass that is there today.[7]

The remains of three other giants, Colossal's Fall, Agurak's Fall, and The Boneslag, can also be found in Frostfire. The skull of one looms over Deadgrin. Another skull can be found far to the east off the coast of Gorgrond, submerged near two small islands that aren't on the map. It has fungi growing out of its eye and mouth. A seventh can be found directly west of Oshu'gun overlooking an Ogre compound.

The Horde Player's Guide says that "ogres were one of the last races of Draenor's giants."[8] This is implying that there has been more than one race of giants that have lived on Draenor, which was later confirmed.

This article or section includes speculation, observations or opinions possibly supported by lore or by Blizzard officials. It should not be taken as representing official lore.
  • They are likely referred to as "grom" in Orcish, which sounds similar to "gronn". This comes from the shared root word of both Grombolar, or "bowels of the giant"[3] and Grommash, or "giant's heart".[9]
  • Despite the further usage of the Temples of the Damned by the Scourge and the Forsaken, the actual bones likely were not continued to be used. The fifth issue of the Warcraft magazine states that all of the Temples of the Damned were destroyed,[2] making the comment that the Scourge "reclaimed this powerful edifice"[4] either not literal, or with much more repairs done than implied.
