Glyphs are spell and ability enhancements created by scribes. Most glyphs change existing abilities, but some grant entirely new ones. Until used, glyphs are not soulbound and can be traded or sold. The colors used in glyphs are colors of the class for which they are meant.
Once learned, glyphs are permanent and may be switched out at any time outside of combat. Changing a glyph requires [Vanishing Powder] for characters level 25-80, [Dust of Disappearance] for characters level 80-85, and [Tome of the Clear Mind] for characters over level 85. Glyphs can be inscribed and removed through the Glyphs tab of the Specialization & Talents interface.
Glyphs first become available at level 25, with additional slots granted at level 50 and 75. All glyphs can be used from level 25.
Major glyphs
Major glyphs feature spell changes that may increase the damage, or another feature of the spell. Some of these glyphs have trade-offs, for example increasing direct damage but removing a DoT effect of the spell.
Minor glyphs
Minor glyphs mostly give convenient or cosmetic improvements, such as changing the visual effect of a spell, or granting a new ability that is purely for entertainment purposes. However, some have more substantial effects, improving or altering important abilities in a number of ways.
Examples:
- Changes the graphics of a spell: [Glyph of the Penguin], [Glyph of the Monkey]
- Increases the effectiveness of a spell, but only in a minor way or with a trade-off: [Glyph of Aquatic Form]
- Grants a new ability: [Glyph of Corpse Explosion], [Glyph of Fetch]
Learning glyphs
Most glyphs must be learned through glyph items, created through the Inscription profession. However, certain major glyphs are learned by each class as they level, at levels 25, 50 and 75 (death knights at levels 60 and 75).
Once a glyph is learned, it is permanently added to the character's glyph library, and will not need to be learned again.
Notes
- Players gain access to glyph slots based on their level:
- Level 25: 1 Major, 1 Minor.
- Level 50: 2 Major, 2 Minor.
- Level 75: 3 Major, 3 Minor.
- Glyph effects cannot be stacked (they are Unique-equipped).
- Some glyphs are exclusive with other glyphs - only one of these glyphs can be inscribed at any time.
- While all glyphs are class-specific, some are also specific to one or more specializations, and cannot be used by other specializations.
Choosing glyphs
The Glyphs tab can be found in the Specialization & Talents interface. Here the player will find all glyphs for their class listed, major glyphs first. Specialization requirements are indicated for each glyph, and mousing over a glyph will reveal its function and other glyphs with which it is exclusive. Unlearned glyphs are greyed-out while unavailable glyphs are listed in red. Players can also search and filter glyphs.
On the left are displayed the character's glyph slots, and any currently inscribed glyphs. The player can right click on a glyph to remove it, provided they have the appropriate reagent. New glyphs can be inscribed by clicking on the desired glyph and then on the slot where it is to be added.
- Inscribing a glyph will cause the player to be dismounted.
- Glyphs can be inscribed at any time except when the player is in combat.
- When you inscribe glyphs from the library, they are not consumed; however in order to switch one for another you must first remove the previous glyph.
- Players with Dual Talent Specialization will have two different sets of glyphs, and will need to activate a specialization in order to change its glyphs.

Lists of the glyphs available to each class can be found on their own pages:

History
Initially, there would be additional glyphs known as "ancient glyphs", added with the Path of the Titans system. When Path of the Titans was canceled, the glyph system was changed to three tiers - Major, Medium and Minor. In patch 4.0.1 this was changed to Prime, Major and Minor. Patch 5.0.4 removed Prime glyphs, and added many new Major and Minor glyphs.
Prime glyphs
Prime glyphs were effective in combat, and generally increased the healing or damage of an ability. They were generally the most potent and important of the glyphs.
Examples:
- Increased the healing done by an ability: [Glyph of Earth Shield], [Glyph of Renew].
- Increased the damage done by an ability: [Glyph of Steady Shot], [Glyph of Arcane Barrage].
- Added an additional effect to your ability: [Glyph of Shadowburn], [Glyph of Howling Blast].
Prime glyphs were removed in patch 5.0.4.[1]
