Transmogrify

Transmogrification (commonly referred to as transmog, tmog, xmog or simply mog), implemented in Patch 4.3, provides the ability to exchange the appearance of your armor and weapons with those of other items. However you must possess and be able to equip both items, armor must be of the same armor type, and weapons must use the same attack style. Not all items or pairings can be used in the transmogrification process.[1][2]

Transmogrifying

To transmogrify gear, first obtain items whose appearance you wish to impose on your equipped gear, and take them to a transmogrifier NPC:

Horde
Warpweaver Dushar in the Drag in Orgrimmar, in the building opposite the cooking trainer.
Warpweaver Shafiee in the Shrine of Two Moons.
Warpweaver Jasor in Warspear.
Alliance
Warpweaver Hashom in The Three Winds in Stormwind, a shop next to the canal on the southwest side of Cathedral Square.
Warpweaver Ramahesh in the Shrine of Seven Stars.
Warpweaver in Stormshield.

Grand Expedition Yak had its reforger changed into a transmogrifier in 6.0 with the removal of reforging. A Transmogrifier can be added to your Garrison as well through the level 3 Storage.

Note that each of these NPCs is accompanied by the NPCs who offer the void storage and reforging services.

Right-click on the transmogrifier. You will be presented with the transmogrification interface, which shows your current equipment, similar to the standard character equipment window. Worn equipment which has not been transmogrified will have gray icons, while equipment which has been transmogrified will bear the colored icon of the items whose appearance they are displaying.

To transmogrify an equipped item, mouse over its slot to have an arrow appear. Click the arrow to view a list all suitable items in your inventory, bank, and void storage. Click on the item whose appearance should be used. You can also right-click items in your inventory or drag them onto transmogrification interface.

You will be shown your character model as it would appear after the transmogrification, plus the fee that will be required. You can continue to try out the appearance of different items in different slots. Finally, click the "Apply" button. You will be charged the fee and your equipped items' appearance will change.

The cost to transmogrify any item is its vendor value, with a minimum of 1g at level 90. Lower-level characters have an adjusted minimum cost.

If you don't want to perform the transmogrification, close the window or walk away.

Obtaining model gear

Subject to certain restrictions, gear from nearly any source can be used to transmogrify, such as: world drops, quest rewards, badge vendors, and crafting.

For the dungeon sets 1 and 2 from Vanilla, which are no longer obtainable, you can buy replicas from vendors at the Darkmoon Faire. These items were specifically made available for transmogrification.

The auction house is a good source as well, though desirable items may command high prices.

Transmogrification rules

Transmogrification Rules | 2011-09-20 01:50 | Blizzard Entertainment Kaivax

Since we announced the transmogrification feature coming to World of Warcraft with patch 4.3, we have monitored thousands of follow-up comments, questions and suggestions from players all over the world.

What follows is our current list of rules for transmogrification. This is a set of rules that we expect to change over time, and is not intended to be 100% comprehensive, but we hope that it can be referenced to answer most questions that players currently have about what they can and cannot expect to be able to do with transmogrification.

  • The character must be able to equip both items.
  • Only uncommon (green), rare (blue) or epic (purple) items may be transmogrified. (exceptions: a select few of these items will be prevented from being used to transmogrify if they are inappropriate)
  • Items must share the same armor type (examples: plate for plate, cloth for cloth)
  • Weapons must be the same weapon type (exceptions: Guns, Crossbows, or Bows)
  • Guns, Crossbows, and Bows can be used to transmogrify Guns, Crossbows, or Bows.
  • Main hand weapons can only be used to transmogrify Main hand weapons.
  • Off-hand weapons can only be used to transmogrify Off-hand weapons.
  • One handed weapons can be used to transmogrify a Main hand or Off-hand weapon.
  • Using an item for transmogrify makes it soulbound.
  • Using an item for transmogrify makes it non-refundable.
  • Using an item for transmogrify makes it non-tradable.
  • Heirlooms and Account Bound items can be transmogrified.
  • Heirlooms and Account Bound items can be used to transmogrify.
  • Legendary items cannot be transmogrified.
  • Legendary items cannot be used to transmogrify.
  • Fishing Poles cannot be transmogrified.
  • Fishing Poles cannot be used to transmogrify.
  • Mailing an item strips its transmogrification.
  • Placing an item in Void Storage strips its transmogrification.
  • Vendoring an item strips its transmogrification.
  • The displayed enchant will be that of the currently equipped item.
  • There may be individual items that are excluded from being transmogrified on the basis that they were originally added to the game as absurdities. (examples: a weapon that looks like a fish, or a chest piece that is invisible)

  • Transmogrifying heirloom items (as source or target) does not make them soulbound, but mailing a transmogrified heirloom to another character will restore the default appearance.
  • Heirloom armor that changes its type at character level 40 (from leather to mail or from mail to plate) can only be transmogrified into its eventual armor type. This means that hunters and shamans can only transmogrify mail heirlooms from level 40 onwards, and warriors and paladins can only transmogrify plate heirlooms from level 40 onwards, since they cannot equip mail and plate respectively until then.
  • Contrary to the blue post above, the quality (color) of an item does not matter at all, the basic rule is that it has to have attributes to be a valid source, and it also has to be Bind on Pickup, Bind on Equip or Bind to Account to be a valid target - other methods to make an item soulbound, such as certain enchantments, do not qualify the item for being a target.
  • In addition, certain items without attributes are intended as sources for transmogrification. Examples of items that are valid sources despite not appearing as such on first glance:
  • Transmogrification can also be used on certain miscellaneous items (armor that is neither cloth, leather, mail nor plate) but is only compatible to other miscellaneous items. As these are rarely used in combat situations, it has little use since you could just equip the item with the desired look anyway. At best, you can make your Achievement profession chefhat [Chef's Hat] look like a Inv misc rabbit ears [Spring Circlet].
  • Items from the Legacy Armor and Weapon Quartermasters cannot be used in transmogrification. However, characters that acquired the right to purchase these items during Classic can acquire Replica items from vendors in Area 52 that are compatible. This cumbersome method had to be used because the Feats of Strength for the Classic PvP titles could not be directly associated with the ability to use these items for transmogrification, and because it cannot be determined when a player purchased them.[3]

Weapon compatibilities

In general when transmogrifying weapons, target and source have to be of the same type. However, this restriction has been relaxed in certain ways since the introduction of Transmogrification. As stated at the beginning of the article, the player in question must be able to use the source and the target; this also includes being the appropriate level for using an item. For example, a druid can equip a polearm or a staff, and transmog one into the other. However a mage cannot transmog their staff into a polearm because they cannot equip polearms.

Weapon types that can be transmogrified to each other:

  • Ranged weapons (bows, crossbows and guns)
  • Two-handed axes, maces, and swords, staves and polearms
  • One-handed axes, maces, and swords

This leaves daggers, fist weapons, wands, shields and off-hand items as incompatible to other weapon types.

Transmogrification set

Main article: Vanity set

A transmogrification set or transmog set, more broadly categorized as a vanity set, is a group of items of the same armor type designed with the same visual style and spanning at least two armor slots. A character wearing the set or a transmogrification of the set will tend to have a consistent appearance, so they are often collected purely for this purpose. They should not be confused with gameplay-affecting armor sets, which grant set bonuses when worn together.

"Transmog set" may also refer to any group of items to which a player has (or had, or intends to have) his or her gear transmogrified. This may range from a true vanity set designed by Blizzard artists, a mix of items custom selected to achieve an unusual in- or out-of-universe look, or a simple grab-bag of preferred items with little regard given to matching or composition.
