Amber-Shaper Un'sok is the fifth boss of Heart of Fear. The last boss between the players and Grand Empress Shek'zeer provides an unorthodox battle which requires high raid awareness of both the boss' abilities and the abilities the players receive when changed into Mutated Constructs.

Background

Adventure Guide

Eager to please his empress, Un'sok has produced several innovative concoctions. Yet this brilliant young alchemist's proximity to the mantid queen has allowed the sha's negative energies to take root in his mind. Now, Un'sok's overwhelming fear of failure drives him to create increasingly deadlier weapons.

Spells and abilities

Stage One: Worthy Test Subjects?

  • Inv sword 09.png  Amber Scalpel — Un'sok carves the ground with a focused beam of pure amber energy. The beam inflicts 19,000 to 21,000[Notes 1] Nature damage every 0.25 sec. at the point of contact, and leaves behind Molten Amber residue. The residue inflicts 20,812 to 24,187[Notes 2] Fire damage every 1 sec. to players who touch it. Some of this residue congeals into Living Amber oozes.
    • Living Amber[Notes 3] — Each of these animated amber oozes focuses mindlessly on a random player, emanating a Corrosive Aura that inflicts 1,567 to 1,732[Notes 4] Nature damage every 2 sec to all players. Each ooze Bursts in a shower of amber when destroyed, inficting 40,950 to 50,050[Notes 5] Nature damage to enemies within 8 yards and healing any other Living Amber within that radius for 40% of their maximum health. In Looking for Raid difficulty, destroying a Living Amber does not heal other nearby Living Amber. In Heroic difficulty, dissolved Living Amber will reconstitute after 30 seconds.
      • Spell yorsahj bloodboil yellow.png  Burning Amber — When a Living Amber is destroyed, it dissolves into a pool that deals 22,200 to 25,800[Notes 6] Fire damage every 1 sec to all enemies within 3 yards.
  • Spell yorsahj bloodboil yellow.png  Parasitic Growth Healer Alert — Amber-Shaper Un'sok causes amber to grow within the body of a random target, inflicting 12,500 [Notes 7]Nature damage every 2 sec. This strain of amber absorbs healing energy, increasing the damage it inflicts to its host in direct proportion to any healing received. After 30 sec, the unstable parasite dissipates without a trace.
  • Trade archaeology insect in amber.png  Reshape Life — Un'sok unleashes a torrent of amber at a player, transforming the target into a misshapen mass of flowing amber that is hostile to players and monsters alike.
    • Mutated Construct — While transformed, the player continuously expends Willpower to retain control over the twisted form, at the rate of 2 per second, beginning with a maximum of 100. When Willpower runs out, the player dies and the Mutated Construct continues to act, uncontrolled.
      • Ability warrior bloodnova.png  Amber Explosion Deadly — The amber encircling the mutated player compels the unleashing of a massive explosion, inflicting 96,250[Notes 8] Nature damage to all players.
      • Ability criticalstrike.png  Amber Strike — The construct inflicts 332,500 to 367,500 Nature damage to the current hostile target and interrupts normal spellcasting, including attempts by other constructs, or by the Amber Monstrosity, to trigger an Amber Explosion. Amber Strike also destabilizes the target, increasing damage taken by 10% for 15 sec. This effect stacks.
      • Spell fire elementaldevastation.png  Break Free Important — Once the physical form of the amber construct has been reduced to 20% of its maximum health, the player can break free with a great surge of will. The player then regains their natural form. In Raid Finder Difficulty, this ability will activate automatically if a transformed construct is damaged below 10% of its maximum health.
      • Spell yorsahj bloodboil yellow.png  Consume Amber — A transformed player consumes a pool of Burning Amber left behind by a defeated Living Amber. The consumption restores 20 Willpower, but also bolsters the mutated form, increasing its current and maximum health by 2,000,000.[Notes 9] In Heroic difficulty, Consume Amber restores 50 Willpower when used during Stage Three of the encounter.
      • Spell nature focusedmind.png  Struggle for Control Important — With a surge of will, the player expends 8 Willpower to force the mutated form to cease all action for 0.5 sec. This also increases the mutated form's damage taken by 100% for 5 sec.
      • Ability criticalstrike.png  Smash — Transformed players use this simple melee attack in lieu of their normal attack, inflicting 102,000 to 138,000 Physical damage to a target.
  • Spell burningsoul.png  Destroy Will — When Un'sok deals melee damage to player who was transformed into a Mutated Construct, his control over amber causes the target's will to unravel, draining 40 Willpower.

Stage Two: Un'sok's Greatest Creation

When Un'sok reaches 70% remaining health, he calls forth a massive Amber Monstrosity to fight beside him. Un'sok continues to attack with his full arsenal of abilities from Stage One.

  • Amber Monstrosity[Notes 10] — Un'sok formed this towering behemoth entirely of flowing amber, and it stands as a triumph of Un'sok's research into creating life from the mantids' amber.
    • Ability warrior bloodnova.png  Amber Explosion — The Monstrosity releases a massive explosion of amber energy, inflicting 97,500 to 102,500[Notes 11] Nature damage to all players.
    • Inv elemental primal fire.png  Massive Stomp — The Monstrosity stomps the ground forcefully, inflicting 74,000 to 86,000[Notes 12] Physical damage to all enemies within 15 yards and knocking them back.
    • Ability warrior throwdown.png  Fling Tank Alert — The Monstrosity grabs its current target in one of its massive hands and hurls the hapless victim at a distant player, causing 63593 to 73906[Notes 13] Physical damage to targets within 8 yards of the point of impact and stunning them for 3 sec.
    • Spell burningsoul.png  Destroy Will — When the Amber Monstrosity deals melee damage to player who was transformed into a Mutated Construct, its attunement to amber causes the target's will to unravel, draining 40 Willpower.
  • Inv elemental primal fire.png  Amber Carapace — While the Amber Monstrosity lives, an Amber Carapace shields Amber-Shaper Un'sok. The Carapace reduces his damage taken by 99%.

Stage Three: Un'sok Unleashed

Upon witnessing the destruction of his greatest creation, Un'sok channels power from the amber pools lining his chamber and prepares to make his final stand. Un'sok no longer uses Amber Scalpel, but now casts Reshape Life with greatly increased frequency.

  • Ability warrior bloodnova.png  Concentrated Mutation — Un'sok draws massive amounts of amber energy into his body, increasing his damage dealt by 50% and attack speed by 50%.
  • Spell fire ragnaros lavabolt.png  Volatile Amber — Un'sok's siphoning agitates the pools of amber around the room, causing them to periodically emit bursts of amber that fly through the air at high velocity. Each amber burst inflicts 23,125 to 26,875[Notes 14] Nature damage to any player it strikes. If a missile strikes a player while they are transformed into a Mutated Construct, it heals them for 20% of their health.
  • Trade archaeology insect in amber.png  Amber Globule Heroic Difficulty Deadly — Un'sok causes two spheres of destructive amber to form from the pools at the edges of the room, each of which fixates on a random player. If an Amber Globule comes into contact with its primary target, it explodes, dealing 600,000 Nature damage to all players within 30 yards. If two Amber Globules touch each other, their energies will neutralize and dissipate harmlessly.

Strategy

Stage 1

Let the tank charge in while the raid spreads out a few yards from each other. Un'sok will randomly target one player and begin channeling Amber Scalpel on it. The targeted player should kite it out of the raid and around the outside of the room. Several Living Amber oozes will spawn out of the beam trail and fixate on another random member of the raid. The living amber do not hit too hard, but should be killed fairly quickly to both lessen the healing load and spawn Burning Amber pools.

At the same time, Un'sok will cast Reshape Life on one of the tanks, turning that unit into a Mutated Construct. While converted, the player starts at 100% willpower and loses 2% every second. Should the player run out of willpower, it will die, and the construct will continue to attack the raid, uncontrolled. The construct has the following four controllable abilities, and one uncontrollable ability:

  1. Ability criticalstrike.png  Amber Strike Melee range — Deals 237,500 to 262,500 Nature damage to the current hostile target, and interrupts normal spellcasting, as well as a target's attempts to trigger an Amber Explosion. Amber Strike also destabilizes the target, increasing damage taken by 10% for 15 sec. Stacks. Instant. (6 sec cooldown)
  2. Spell nature focusedmind.png  Struggle for Control — With a surge of will, force your mutated form to cease all action for 0.5 sec, also aiding your allies by increasing your damage taken by 100% for 5 sec. Instant. Costs 8% Willpower (6 sec cooldown)
  3. Spell yorsahj bloodboil yellow.png  Consume Amber 8 yd range — Absorb a nearby pool of Burning Amber, formed from a dissolved Living Amber. This bolsters your mutated form, increasing current and maximum health by 2,000,000, but also restores 20% Willpower. Instant (1.5 sec cooldown)
  4. Spell fire elementaldevastation.png  Break Free — Regain your true form with a mighty surge of will. Only usable once your transformed body has been reduced below 20% of maximum health. Instant
  • Ability warrior bloodnova.png  Amber Explosion 200 yd range — Deals 96250 Nature damage to all enemies within 200 yards. 2.5 sec cast

While converted, the player is hostile to both Un'sok and the rest of the raid. Thus, the raid can attack the construct and the player controlling the construct can attack the boss. The construct will additionally cast Amber Explosion, which can be interrupted with Struggle for Control. If not interrupted, the explosion will do a huge amount of damage to the rest of the raid. Breaking free can only be used while below 20% health, so the raid must damage the construct below 20% health before the controlling player runs out of willpower.

The tank turned into a Mutated Construct should spam Amber Strike on the boss to place the stacking debuff on the boss, and should aim to Break Free just before the co-tank is turned into a Mutated Construct, therefore enabling the new Mutated Construct to maintain the debuff. As the Mutated Construct is also hostile towards the raid, the Construct must be careful not to accidentally target one of the other raid members.

Consume Amber should not be used in this stage of the fight, as the Burning Amber pools should be kept for Stage 3 (where breaking players out of Constructs is not feasible). DPS should bring the Construct down to below 20% health as soon as possible to avoid such a situation from being necessary.

It should also be noted that the Mutated Construct can not act as a tank, as Un'sok's Destroy Will ability will quickly drain a Construct of all willpower.

Stage 2

At 70% health, Un'sok will spawn the Amber Monstrosity (who needs to be quickly picked up by a tank) and put on his Amber Carapace, which absorbs 99% of all incoming damage. Un'sok keeps using all of his phase one abilities, but will instead target healers and DPS (instead of the tanks) for Reshape Life. The raid should continue to break out converted units while the Monstrosity is still alive. The Monstrosity has its own version of Amber Explosion, which does far more damage to the rest of the raid and can only be interrupted by a Construct's Amber Strike ability.

The Monstrosity's Fling ability appears to additionally reset its target's threat, thus necessitating a tank switch.

The Mutated Construct's role is similar to that of Stage 1 (use Amber Strike on the target, interrupt Amber Explosion with Struggle for Control, and Break Free when a new player is about to be reshaped into a Construct), although the target will be the Amber Monstrosity. There is no point in targeting Un'sok due to the 99% damage reduction, although the tank not on the Monstrosity should keep him occupied.

The Amber Monstrosity's Amber Explosion is significantly more damaging than the Mutated Construct's Amber Explosion. If a conflict between the two arises (due to GCD clashes), the Mutated Construct must prioritise interrupting the Amber Monstrosity's Amber Explosion with Amber Strike over the Construct's own Amber Explosion. The Construct should keep an eye on boss timers to ensure that Amber Strike is off cooldown when the Amber Monstrosity starts casting Amber Explosion.

Mutated Constructs should still avoid using Consume Amber as much as possible. Amber Scalpel will continue to annoy the raid during this stage.

Stage 3

When the Amber Monstrosity dies, the encounter enters its final phase. Un'sok will stop using Amber Scalpel, but starts using Reshape Life much more frequently. This is a burn phase, and the raid cannot spare any time or damage to free converted players from the constructs. Converted players should focus their attention on keeping their willpower up with Consume Amber (which is the primary reason for avoiding use of Consume Amber previously, to avoid running out of Amber Pools) and spam Amber Strike on Un'sok, stacking the damage taken debuff on him. Pop [Heroism] and quickly work through Un'sok's remaining health.

Alternate 10-man Normal Strategy

If the raid has competent off-spec healers, it is possible to run with 2 tanks, 4-5 healers and 3-4 DPS.[1]

In Phase 1, DPS should focus on the Amber Construct, and when it has been pushed to 20%, switch over to the Living Amber. Minimal DPS should be done on the boss, as this strategy is reliant on having the majority of the Amber Pools generated in Phase 1. It is recommended that the raid wait for at least 7 Amber Scalpels before pushing the boss into Phase 2.

In Phase 2, pop [Heroism] to quickly free the tank trapped inside the Amber Construct. Once the tank is freed, any further Constructs should no longer be freed for the remainder of the encounter. DPS will need to prioritise killing Living Amber, then move to the Monstrosity; Constructs should spam the Monstrosity and eat the Amber Pools whenever low on willpower. If done correctly, there should be around three Constructs going into Phase 3.

Everyone needs to focus on the boss in Phase 3. Tanks will need to chain cooldowns when there is only one healer (or no healers!) remaining.

This strategy requires a long Phase 1 to provide enough Amber Pools for the subsequent phases, but will result in a short Phase 2 and Phase 3 due to the army of Constructs placing extremely high stacks of the debuff on their targets. The increased number of healers is required to mitigate bad RNG turning too many healers into Constructs too soon. It is expected that the Constructs do the bulk of the damage dealt in Phases 2 and 3; consequently, it is important that the all raid members know how to play as a Construct and can handle control/interrupts perfectly.
