Dark Ranger Velonara is a Darkfallen dark ranger and a member of the Desolate Council, the governing body of the Forsaken.

In life, she was a Quel'dorei ranger, until she was killed by Arthas Menethil and his Scourge during the Scourge invasion of Quel'Thalas. She was later resurrected by Sylvanas Windrunner as one of her dark rangers. Following the Fourth War, Velonara decided to stay with the Forsaken, and side against the Banshee Queen who defected from the Horde.

Following the Forsaken reclaiming the Ruins of Lordaeron she, alongside other prominent Forsaken, created a new Desolate Council to serve as the governing body of their people.

Biography[]

Third War[]

Ranger Velonara

Velonara during the Third War.

Velonara was a ranger in service of Quel'Thalas and was betrothed to a nobleman. She was killed by the death knight Arthas Menethil when he invaded the elven kingdom and created the Dead Scar.[1] Some time later, Velonara was resurrected by the undead Sylvanas Windrunner and called to her service as a dark ranger.

During the initial outbreak of the plague of undeath, her mother was tortured by James Vishas of the Scarlet Crusade.[2]

Cataclysm[]

At the time of the Cataclysm, Velonara led the Horde adventurers against the remnants of the Scarlet Crusade in Tirisfal Glades. With the Scarlet Crusade on its last legs, Velonara along with several Forsaken Dreadguards and Forsaken Flesh Rippers were out to remove what remains of it from the Dark Lady's domain - by force. She could be found in all four wings of the Scarlet Monastery.

During the war in Draenor, Velonara was present in Axefall in Spires of Arak, dealing with the poisoned troll named Lunzul. She later worked with the commander in Shadow's Vigil to find the Shattered Hand assassin, Gardul Venomshiv, and created the antidote. She then joins the Garrison as a follower.

After the disastrous battle at the Broken Shore, Velonara was present at Vol'jin's funeral ceremony, accompanying Lady Sylvanas. She defended her when demons were revealed among the crowd by the Illidari.

During the third invasion of the Burning Legion, she appeared at the Trueshot Lodge to represent the dark rangers in the Unseen Path, the union of all hunters on Azeroth.

Death Hunter Moorgoth admitted to having a crush on Velonara and asked the Huntsman to speak with her on his behalf.

Warchief of the Horde - Velonara

Dark Ranger Velonara outside the Orgrimmar Embassy.

At the time of the Fourth War, Velonara participated in the Battle for Darkshore. When the Horde controls Darkshore, Velonara is stationed at Bashal'Aran. She enlisted Horde adventurers with striking against the Twilight's Hammer, who sought to take control of the elemental breaches within Darkshore as the Horde and Alliance were focused on one another.[3]

During the annual ritual remembering the losses of the blood elves to the Scourge, a vision of the living Ranger Velonara can be seen fighting alongside her Farstrider comrades against the Scourge led by Arthas Menethil near the gate of Deatholme as part of the recreation of the past when Quel'Thalas fell. She was the last to fall before Arthas proceeded further into the elven home.[1]

In the aftermath of Sylvanas's betrayal of the Horde, the death of Varok Saurfang, and the end of the Fourth War, the leaders of the Horde agreed that the position of Warchief was not needed in times of peace. As such, instead of a singular dictator, the Horde would be led by a conglomerate of leaders who would represent their people's interests known as the Horde Council.[4] Following the council's formation, Velonara came to reside near the entrance of the Orgrimmar Embassy district of the city. Though once fiercely loyal to Sylvanas, Velonara declared that her people were the sin'dorei and Forsaken and that she stood with them and the Horde. She also revealed that while some of her fellow dark rangers sided with Sylvanas, many others have remained with the Horde.

Desolate Council

Velonara with her fellow members of the Desolate Council.

Sometime later she joined the Forsaken in mustering in the ruins of the kingdom of Lordaeron, as they sought to reclaim as much as they could of the Tirisfal Glades. Declaring that her first duty was the safety of the Forsaken, Velonara directed champions, with eradicating the blighted undead attacking Brill.[5] With this task done, Velonara alongside other influential figures that had risen to prominence among the Forsaken, joined Calia Menethil in a meeting to determine their next of course of action.[6]

While Lilian Voss wanted to directly focus on dealing with the plague in the Undercity, Deathstalker Commander Belmont questioned what they should do about Calia, only for Velonara to declare that they should focus on the blight. She then turned to Master Apothecary Faranell and questioned if he had more plague eaters, only for him to reveal to Calia and the others that he only had one left, and that while he could make more for them to be effective, they must be formulated to survive the plague. This in turn inspired Calia to point out that they might be able to turn to the plague-lords of Maldraxxus for insight. When Faranell revealed that he required an undiluted sample of the plague from deep within its reaches, Calia vowed to acquire it for him, but both Faranell and Belmont were skeptical of her being able to acquire it and survive.[7] Calia then called upon the light and with the champion by her side, she ventured into the plague and successfully acquired the plague sample, which greatly surprised Belmont.[8] With the sample in their possession, Calia, Voss, the champion, and the plague eater went to Maldraxxus.[9]

In time they returned with the empowered plague eater, where Calia informed Faranell of how the blight sample became a living manifestation, to which Faranell was quick to declare it ingenious, as it would be easier to kill.[10] This plan was ultimately successful as the plague manifested as an Amalgam and was slain, liberating the Ruins of Lordaeron from the plague.[11] Following this, Voss declared that the Forsaken have many points of view and should be led by a council, not a single ruler, a motion accepted by the other Forsaken leaders, with Velonara declaring that she and her fellow dark rangers stood with Voss. Thus a new Desolate Council composed of Voss, Calia, Belmont, Faranell, and Velonara was created to lead the Forsaken.[12] In the aftermath Velonara reflected that for years the dark rangers had worked as agents for Sylvanas Windrunner, but now with the Desolate Council they serve a greater cause: shaping their people's future. Though knowing that they couldn't be certain of what lied ahead, she vowed that the dark rangers would do everything in their power to defend this kingdom.[13]

Dragonflight[]

Dragonflight This section concerns content related to Dragonflight.

After the Scarlet Crusade forces led by Scarlet Commander Forsythe seized control of Fenris Isle, they used it as a staging ground to strike against the Forsaken within the Ruins of Lordaeron. Velonara and Master Apothecary Faranell subsequently traveled to the Sepulcher for their plan of counterattack, where they found themselves joined by Forsaken champions.[14] While Faranell sent them to gather ingredients for a concoction for the war effort, Velonara, vowing to not let the crusade imitate their people in Silverpine Forest, sent them to destroy slanderous propaganda.[15] After Faranell's concoction was used to weaken the defenses on the isle, Velonara called in the full force of the Forsaken and took part in the subsequent assault.[16][17] In the aftermath, Velonara returned to the Ruins of Lordaeron, where she and the other members of the Desolate Council declared the champion represented what it meant to be Forsaken.[18]

If carrying 13 Black Roses
Gossip I was just talking to Moorgoth, and he...
You mean that moping, black-clad imbecile across the way? The one who keeps leering at me?
Yes, I've noticed him. He's not the first mortal to obsess over a dark ranger. I don't understand the fascination some have with death. He should spend his time pursuing the living, not longing for a dalliance with one who has already passed.
Life is often wasted on the living.
Gossip You sound as if you miss your previous life.
I was a maiden, pure and true. A young ranger in service of Silvermoon, betrothed to the nobleman of my dreams.
Then Arthas came.
I fell in battle as the mad prince cut a black scar through the land I loved. But at least I was at peace, I suppose. For a time. Until the Banshee Queen pulled me back from beyond and damned my soul into her service.
You'll have to pardon me if I have little patience for imbeciles like Moorgoth, who take for granted what they have and think to find happiness in pain.
Gossip He doesn't seem like such a bad guy.
<The dark ranger sighs.>
I suppose he has a certain charm. He can't help his ignorance.
But he must realize that my heart is incapable of feeling love or happiness, nor could we... engage in the sort of intimacy he desires. I am a dead, rotting thing, and only the abyss awaits me.
Please if you find any fondness for him at all, break his heart now. It will save him true pain later.
<Velonara pauses for a moment, then takes a single black rose and caresses its petals.>
Gossip I'll let him down easily.

Our quivers must remain full. Even though our direction is unclear.

Gossip How do you feel about Calia?

Some might also ask if the Dark Rangers are to be trusted, as well. We were Sylvanas' closest cohorts, and even we were left behind.
I have declared my allegiance to the Forsaken. Calia should be given the opportunity to prove the same.
Gossip Let's talk about something else.

Gossip Who are you?

I am Velonara, former ranger of the Quel'dorei. I served under Ranger-General Sylvanas Windrunner, and I served the Banshee Queen in death.
I am loyal to the Forsaken and the Horde, and will use my bow in their defense for as long as I have strength.
