The Darnassian Army[2] is formed from the collective military forces of the kaldorei. The armies of the night elves are some of the most diverse on Azeroth, encompassing a range of different roles and species.[3] The army's largest and most visible component are the Sentinels, warrior women who act as both the night elves' domestic guards and front-line troops. However, in times of war, the kaldorei also rely heavily on druids, wisps, ancients, hippogryphs, chimaera, treants, dryads, and others.[4]
Historically, Darnassus's army has been based from the World Tree Teldrassil, and is most active on the continent of Kalimdor where it usually acts in a defensive role to protect kaldorei lands. As part of the Grand Alliance, however, the Darnassian Army has seen action across Azeroth and beyond, dealing with threats such as the Burning Legion, the Undead Scourge, and the Horde.
Overview[]
- For a summary of Darnassus's military history, see Sentinel Army.
The Darnassian Army is mostly made up of night elf soldiers, supported in battle by other races of the forest, such as ancients, treants, dryads, and keepers of the grove.[5] In times of need, these natural allies will by rallied and can prove decisive on the battlefield. Many units also consist of kaldorei mounted on various beasts. Hippogryphs and chimaera are generally used for aerial attacks, while nightsabers are the preferred ground mount for Darnassian forces. Even the night elves' own ancestors may aid them in war in the form of wisps, having become one with the forest itself.[6]
While Sentinels form the bulk of kaldorei soldiers, in recent times they been increasingly joined by other units (male and female) such as archers, druids, priestesses, and small numbers of wardens.[7] Glaive throwers are the chief siege weapon of the Darnassian Army, able to hurl massive glaives at targets from a distance.
The Darnassian military maintains bases across Kalimdor, with the largest at Feathermoon Stronghold in Feralas, and contested sections of Darkshore. The army's former headquarters and namesake, the city of Darnassus, was ultimately destroyed during the War of the Thorns, when the World Tree Teldrassil was burned by the Horde. Beyond Kalimdor, kaldorei forces also have major presences on the Eastern Kingdoms,[8] Pandaria,[9] and Outland,[10] among others. As part of the Alliance army, they are stationed even more extensively across Azeroth and beyond.
Divisions[]
The Darnassian Army is made up of numerous subgroups, including:
- The Sentinel Army; one of the largest military components, formed from fearsome warrior-women with close ties to the Sisterhood of Elune. The Sentinels act as both front-line troops and domestic guards throughout kaldorei lands.
- The Silverwing Sentinels; an elite faction of Sentinels spearheading the effort to take Warsong Gulch from the Horde.
- The Army of the Black Moon; personal army of the Night Warrior, Tyrande Whisperwind, fighting in the Battle for Darkshore.
- The Darnassian City Guard; a force responsible for protecting the city of Darnassus and the surrounding region. Status unknown following the Burning of Teldrassil.
