Objectives

Investigate the forgotten stacks in the Hall of the Guardian for clues to  [Ebonchill]'s last known master, Arrexis.

  • Speak with Meryl

Description

Ebonchill bears a lineage of powerful wielders dating back to its maker, Alodi. He passed it on to his favorite apprentice and so on until... the archmage Arrexis, I believe.

Arrexis disappeared sometime around the First War. I know nothing of his fate, but the answer may well be somewhere in this library.

Start by looking around here. Whatever you find should lead us to Ebonchill.

From the texts you found, it is clear that Ebonchill is in the hands of Balaadur. There is no way he would not claim such a powerful staff.

That is a problem, but not an impossible one. All we need to do is get access to Balaadur.

Notes

There are five tomes scattered around the Hall: The Hunter of Mages, Old Journal, Old Scrap of Paper, The Manastorm Decision and the Forgotten Missive. The first three are the ones required for the quest.

During the quest, Meryl Felstorm has the following gossip text:

Any information you can find on Arrexis, how he died, and the whereabouts of Ebonchill would be greatly appreciated.
Gossip Can you tell me more about Arrexis?
Arrexis was a powerful and well known member of the Order of Tirisfal around the First War. I barely spoke to him, busy with my own goals. I knew he wielded Ebonchill. Then, mysteriously, I returned from a long journey and he was gone. His apprentices were gone and any materials and belongings related to him. The other members of the order were very tightlipped, only saying that something horrible had befallen him.
Ebonchill was nowhere to be found.

After interacting with the three tomes, the following dialogue option becomes available:

Gossip <Inform Meryl of the information you uncovered.>

This will trigger the following conversation.

Meryl Felstorm says: So Arrexis was ambushed by this eredar, Balaadur? Then he is probably in possession of the staff...
Alodi says: My staff... in the hands of the enemy! We must get it back!
Meryl Felstorm says: With the invasion I have no doubt he is either here or watching. I propose something... audacious.
Meryl Felstorm says: Let us recreate Arrexis's ritual! Conducting the ritual at an invasion point will attract Balaadur's attention. He will likely try an ambush, but we will be ready.
Alodi says: That just might work. We need the details of this ritual, as well as the power to pull it off. Let us get to it.

Speak with Meryl again to turn in the quest.
