I found a great mode for the <gallery> which will look like this: <gallery mode="packed-hover">. You can find more information about it here. This was added in MediaWiki version 1.22, so it was kinda recent.

What I think would be a good use for this is to use it on articles that has a big gallery. A lot of images in a gallery, such as the expansion articles. What it does is just takes the text on the image and hides it, once the pointer (mouse) hovers over the image, the text will slide up from the bottom of the image with a white background. Also the image does not look like its in a container. I've already tested it here on Wowpedia but there is a slight problem that involves CSS work. Let's just say, the dark theme really didn't make this work. Here is an example:

You may have notice the issue. The text that is not a link, blends in with the white background while the link is easily readable. If this feature were to be used on articles with big galleries, that issue will need to be fixed.

This seems like a great idea, could reduce scrolling too!

Ohh! Looks interesting, if the text issue can be fixed. PeterWind (talk) 13:24, 24 September 2015 (UTC)
FWIW, I noticed that on the mobile site the text simply appears under the image and is thus always visible. But yes, much like PeterWind said, I imagine this could be quite useful. -- IconSmall TrollDeathKnight Male DeludedTroll (talkcontribs) 11:27, 25 September 2015 (UTC)

The following articles is what I think could find this feature useful:

Especially these

If I understand this right, the idea is to reduce the amount of space taken up by galleries by hiding the caption unless you hover over the image. While this could be useful in certain circumstances, I'm opposed to it unless an option was made available to "opt out", as it were. Surafbrov mentions this being particularly useful for big galleries, but I don't see it turning out well exactly because they are big galleries. Imagine for a moment that you are a complete newbie to the World of Warcraft -- would you like needing to hover each and every one of the images so you can understand what they're about? Some of the images are pretty obvious already, like an image for an expansion's box art, others not so much (geography for example).
Myself, I greatly prefer to see the text without it impinging on the image itself. -- Alayea (talk / contrib) 22:46, 30 October 2015 (UTC)
