The smithable skeleton keys have an equivalent lockpicking skill to their blacksmithing requirement. Failure to open or insufficient "skill" does not consume the key. Should you recieve the "failure message," simply try again. These keys are used (right-click) to open any variation of Iron lockboxes, among others.
