Proc chances under the PPM model

As of patch 3.1., the proc chance of Instant Poison (along with [Wound Poison] was changed to a PPM model, normalized for 1.4 speed weapons. This results in the following proc chances per weapon speed per attack:

Weapon Speed Proc Chance (0/5 IP) Proc Chance (4/5 IP)
1.3 18.57% 26%
1.4 20% 28%
1.5 21.43% 30%
1.6 22.86% 32%
1.7 24.29% 34%
1.8 25.71% 36%
1.9 27.14% 38%
2.0 28.57% 40%
2.1 30% 42%
2.2 31.43% 44%
2.3 32.86% 46%
2.4 34.29% 48%
2.5 35.71% 50%
2.6 37.14% 52%
2.7 38.57% 54%
2.8 40% 56%

The chance of applying a PPM poison is normalized to a 1.4 weapon speed:

  • PPM = Base Proc Rate * 60 / Weapon Speed = 0.20p/hit * 60s/min / 1.4s/hit = 8.57 p/min

After normalization, slow weapons will have a higher PPH rate than fast ones. Working backwards:

  • PPH (for a 2.8 weapon) = Normalized Proc Rate * Weapon Speed / 60 = 8.57p/min * 2.8s/hit / 60s/min = 40% proc/hit

Notes

  • Instant Poison is the first poisons a rogue may use and is bought from poison vendors at level 10. A quest to gain access to poisons is no longer required and the ability to make poisons yourself with a profession-like skill has been removed even longer ago.
  • Safe to use in any situation, as it has no CC-breaking DoTs.
  • Nature damage is not reduced by armor, so it is more effective against heavily armored opponents.
  • Shiv can be used to automatically apply the poison, effectively increasing flat damage of the attack. Shiv however can never crit and neither can the poison it applies so it's use is in this way is limited.

Patch changes

  • Mists of Pandaria Patch 5.0.4 (2012-08-28): Removed.
  • Cataclysm Patch 4.0.1 (2010-10-12): There are no ranks anymore. The nature damage the poison causes scales up as listed in the above table.
  • WoW Icon update.png Patch 1.11.0 (2006-06-20): Stacks up to 20.
  • PTR client.png Patch 0.7 (2004-06-15): Damage slightly reduced.
