Isle of Dread

Isle of Dread, prior to Cataclysm.

The Isle of Dread [30, 80]VZ-FeralasBlip was an island once located off the west coast in Feralas, south of Sardor Isle. It was the home to many level 60-62 elite chimaeras referred to as "chimaerok". The chimaeras, along with technically the whole isle, were a part of the Scepter of the Shifting Sands questline which opened the gates of Ahn'Qiraj.

The chimaeras on the isle consisted of thee types, plus their leader.

The three lesser chimaeras dropped Chimaerok Tenderloins which was a quest-objective in N [60R] The Isle of Dread!. This quest eventually led to N [60] Dirge's Kickin' Chimaerok Chops which gave the player Inv misc book 02 [Recipe: Dirge's Kickin' Chimaerok Chops]. This recipe used furthermore Chimaerok Tenderloins to create Inv misc food 65 [Dirge's Kickin' Chimaerok Chops] which prior to the Burning Crusade was the most powerful food in the game. The recipe is still (as of Cataclysm) the only epic cooking recipe in the game.

Lord Lakmaeran, in addition to also dropping Inv misc food 70 [Chimaerok Tenderloin], also dropped Inv misc food 15 [Lakmaeran's Carcass] which was an objective in the same quest. The carcass was eventually turned into a Inv misc food 15 [500 Pound Chicken] which was gobbled up by the gnome wizard Neutral Narain Soothfancy.

The isle was also the home to a group of naga who dwelled in a cave at the northern end. They were led by Lord Shalzaru, whom players were asked to kill as a quest for the former Feathermoon Stronghold. The cave itself seems to have been completely unique in design and went quite deep. There was a secret underwater passageway that lead into an inner chamber, although it had no apparent special uses besides being the location in which Lady Szallah resided. The only entrance to the central valley was in the southeastern part of the island, from all other sides the central valley was inaccessible due to unyielding cliffs.

What remains of the entrance to Lord Shalzaru's cave.

In World of Warcraft: Cataclysm, the Isle of Dread was sunk by the tidal waves unleashed by the worldwide sundering. Since the chimaeras living on the isle haven't been seen anywhere else after it was sunk, they were presumably all killed before they could make their escape. The only remaining Chimaerok is Prince Lakma, a rare mob found in the mountain range between Silithus and Feralas, who bears the title <The Last Chimaerok>. He is likely the son of Lord Lakmaeran. The questline was also removed. The nearby Feathermoon Stronghold was damaged and abandoned as well, and a new Feathermoon Stronghold was built on the mainland of Feralas. The cave where Shalzaru resided also collapsed.

The underwater remains of the north end of the island are in Feralas' fatigue range, except for a small mountain range cutting the north edge off from the rest of the island. The occasional Coast Crawl Snapclaws and Coast Crawl Deepseers can be found here. The whole island except for the northern edge has been stripped clean of everything.

Off the coast of Feralas there are two large islands, one being the Isle of Dread.[1] Directly south of Sardor Isle, across a narrow channel, lies this place, home to ancient ruins from the Sundering. The night elves of Feathermoon studied them until recently, when naga of the Hatecrest tribe showed up and moved in. Shandris Feathermoon is sure the Hatecrest is up to no good. Whatever they're looking for in that place, it bodes ill.[2]
