Karkut appears to be a tuskarr deity who is also known as "he who watches over the dead".[1] According to Ataika, death knights such as Thassarian bear his mark.[1] Karkut is said to watch over fallen tuskarr so they do not lose their way.[2] The tuskarr believe that Karkut's spirit is currently walking the earth, gathering the spirits of dead tuskarr.[3] Karkut awaits the spirits of dead tuskarr as they pass on.[4]

Speculation[]

This article or section includes speculation, observations or opinions possibly supported by lore or by Blizzard officials. It should not be taken as representing official lore.

It is speculated that the tuskarr believe that the Lich King is Karkut, as undeath is under the Lich King's dominion in Northrend, and he is often called the "Death God" by the vrykul who serve him. This would fit in with the suggestion that the death knights bear his mark and that Karkut now walks the land collecting souls. On the other hand, the tuskarr also seem to believe that Karkut looks favorably upon them, which would make little sense if they thought he was the Lich King, unless of course it is because the Lich King failed to claim their souls for the Scourge. Also notable is that Elder Ko'nani refers to the Lich King as "the Dark One".

Perhaps more likely is that Karkut is an entity in the Shadowlands, or perhaps simply a tuskarr personification of the power of Death, which would be the 'mark' that death knight possess.
