Mage abilities are abilities used by mages. Most abilities are shared between all specializations, while some are only specific to one (or two) specializations. Mage abilities use three schools of magic: Arcane, Fire, and Frost.

All mages automatically learn the following spells at the specified level, regardless of specialization. Portals and teleports are listed in another section of this article.

Spell Level
[Frostbolt] 1
[Fire Blast] 2
[Frost Nova] 3
[Blink] 4
[Conjure Refreshment] 5
[Arcane Explosion] 6
[Counterspell] 7
[Arcane Intellect] 8
[Slow Fall] 9
[Polymorph] 10
[Teleport] 11
[Ice Block] 22
[Portal] 24
[Remove Curse] 28
[Invisibility] 34
[Spellsteal] 39
[Mirror Image] 44
[Time Warp] 49

The three mage specializations are Arcane, Fire, and Frost (all caster DPS).

For a summary of the character and strengths of each spec, see Mage specializations.

Talents become available at level 15. Only one talent can be chosen from each tier.

They can be swapped out any time outside of a rested area using  [Tome of the Tranquil Mind].

PvP talents

PvP talents become available at level 20. Up to 3 talents may be active at any given time (with additional slots becoming available at levels 30 and 40).

They can be swapped out any time outside of combat, in rested areas, or during the beginning of a PvP match. Other situations require the use of  [Tome of the Tranquil Mind].

Glyphs are spell and ability enhancements that add cosmetic effects or minor enhancements, created by scribes. Glyphs are color-coded to the class for which they are meant.

Glyphs can be removed any time outside of combat using  [Vanishing Powder] and can be used from level 25.

Mages can learn to teleport themselves and open up portals for their party members for instant travel to friendly capital cities by visiting a portal trainer. Portal trainers are typically found nearby the mage trainers in each capital city. Since patch 5.0.4, neither teleports nor portals require reagents.

Extra spells

These spells are alternate versions of trainable spells, functionally identical, but possessing a different icon or other cosmetic difference. They are learned through books or given as quest rewards.
