Mastiffs are a breed of dogs found primarily in Gilneas. They appear to be common pets and companions of human societies, including vrykul.

A mastiff bred for rescue, the Alterac brewhound's bloodline is famous for having found and resuscitated many mountain travelers trapped beneath the snow... and then slobbering all over them.[1]

Mastiffs will be tamable in Cataclysm, being the first members of dog, a new ferocity pet class. Players that start as a worgen hunter will receive a mastiff as their first pet. Mastiffs belong to the Ferocity talent tree family and have a very useful PvP ability ( [Lock Jaw]), making them not in a way exotic, but very demanding. They come in shades of black, grey, and brown.

As a companion pet

The  [Alterac Brandy] is available from the Pet Store for $10 US or €10.

The classic mastiff can be found as of Legion, through the Grumpy pet, which can be obtained from the burning house in Bradensbrook in Val'sharah.

Trivia

"Jag hund" concept art.
  • Concept art for a mastiff-like breed of hounds employed by the vrykul already existed before the release of Wrath of the Lich King as the "jag hund".
  • Several mobs that once used the hyena model have been updated to use the new mastiff model in Cataclysm, such as the various hounds employed by the Scarlet Crusade.
