The ogre lords of Outland are the only ogres known to retain some of the physical traits of their gronn progenitors, such as the bony, calcified protrusions on their head and back, as well as a portion of the gronn's immense size and strength. Other unique characteristics possessed by the ogre lords are their intelligence and reasoning abilities, which are more acute than those of their ogre cousins. This combination of brute strength and increased intellect make the ogre lords worthy of both respect and fear. Being born with a single eye as a regular ogre is believed to be a mark of greatness due to the similarity to the ogre lords of yore.
Ogre lords are considered to be rare. Some of the more notable ones include Cho'war the Pillager, who founded the Warmaul clan by driving out the gronn from the Warmaul Hill region; Rom'ogg Bonecrusher, who piqued the interest of the Twilight's Hammer cult with his merciless treatment of the ogres and who then oversaw the Chamber of Incineration; and High King Maulgar, right hand of Gruul the Dragonkiller.
The Bladespire clan was once among the weakest ogre clans in the Blade's Edge Mountains, lacking the numbers of the Bloodmaul or the physical strength of the Boulderfist. The birth of Maulgar changed their fate forever. Stronger and hardier than any other ogre of his age, he swiftly drew the attention of the previous High King due to his prowess in battle. When the king demanded a demonstration of Maulgar's might, Maulgar snapped the king's neck where he stood, thereby shifting the balance of power from the Boulderfist to the Bladespire and drawing the attention of Gruul himself. Fanatically loyal to the gronn, Maulgar came to serve as Gruul's right hand and the guardian of the gronn lord's lair. Maulgar surrounded himself with only the most powerful of his clan and led these elite few into battle, commanding them to augment his tremendous fighting abilities with their potent magic. With such powerful allies at his side and the rest of the Bladespire clan at his command, Maulgar had become the most dangerous ogre in all of Outland.

Ogre lords are large, two-headed ogres or or ogres in unique armor. Many of the ogre lords rallied the remnants of their people that were scattered when the Old Horde fell. Though their plans were unknown, there was no doubt that these powerful, deceptively intelligent warriors would gather their forces once more. Using their immense bulk to terrorize their lesser ilk into service, ogre lords were often encountered guarding gold mines, healing pools and other valuable locations. Although they did not cast spells, ogre lords made up for their lack of magic with pure brawn, blasting their tree-trunk sized clubs into their enemies' skulls with unequaled fury.

In the RPG
- Although the ogre lords were originally described as the missing link between ogres and gronn, they are nowhere to be found on the alternate Draenor, seemingly having been replaced by the ogron. It's possible that the ogre lords are now intended to be the link between ogres and ogron, rather than ogres and gronn.
- As High King Maulgar was born of normal ogres, it is possible that they are throwbacks, not links.
- Despite looking like simple ogres, several creatures in World of Warcraft seem to be references to the original ogre lords of Warcraft III, such as the Mosh'Ogg Lords, the Dustbelcher Lords and the Boulderfist Lords, the latter even having a like their original incarnation.
