The Farraki tribe[3][4][5] or the Sandfury tribe[6] (sometimes spelled Sand Fury),[7] originally known as the Razorbranch tribe,[8][9] is a tribe of sand trolls, located in the deserts of Southern Kalimdor.

They practice blood magic to survive the harsh desert.[10]

History[]

Ancient history[]

Zul'Farrak

Zul'Farrak

Prior to the War of the Ancients, the Razorbranch tribe was originally part of the Gurubashi Empire,[8] living on the fringes of the empire.[11] The Sundering shattered the jungle trolls' territory and isolated the Razorbranch, leaving them stranded in the middle of what swiftly became the desert of Tanaris. The relentless desert sun of Tanaris beat down on the trolls, who gradually adapted to their harsh new environment, becoming sand trolls, now known as the Sandfury tribe. Today they bear only a rough resemblance to the jungle trolls from whom they are descended.[11]

The capital of the Sandfury is the troll city of Zul'Farrak,[6] but they have few other remaining settlements. Tanaris has long since reclaimed them, leaving it dotted with buried ruins. Since the Sundering, the sand trolls have been forced to give up the majority of Tanaris to outsiders, and are thus fierce to defend what remains of their lands.[6]

Long ago the Sandfury waged a brutal war against the qiraji. The martyr Theka was slain and thus Zul'Farrak still stands because of his brave sacrifice. Even in death he maintains a vigil over his beloved city, and it is said that the dozens of insectoid warriors who killed him were cursed to live as mindless scarabs, scuttling at the martyr's side.[12]

They worship Gahz'rilla as a deity. They also worship the loa Shadra, Kimbul, and Mueh'zala.

Modern era[]

By a few years after the Third War, much of the Sandfury homeland lay in ruins, its cities squatted in by invading ogres and Wastewander bandits. The tribe had developed hostility toward both the Horde and the Alliance, as well as the silithid descendants of the Aqir, and the goblins who founded the nearby city of Gadgetzan in service to the Steamwheedle Trade Princes. Adventurers from those factions were in part attracted to Zul'Farrak due to [Sul'thraze the Lasher], which was rumored to reside in Zul'Farrak.[6] Chief Ukorz Sandscalp was obsessed with restoring his tribe to its former glory, raised on stories of a time when trolls lorded over their ancient lands without interference from foreign interlopers.[13] Nevertheless, new battles broke out daily between the sand trolls and a wide assortment of interlopers.

The Sandfury need every troll to pitch in just to scrape by, so they learned to raise the dead with voodoo so every troll could continue working even after death.[14]

Sandsorrow Watch is a series of watchtowers used to keep an eye on their holdings. One watchtower was lost to the Mithril Order group, led by Trenton Lighthammer‎.[10]

Cataclysm[]

Shortly before the Shattering of the world the Sandfury trolls were working with Cho'gall and the Twilight's Hammer. Led by Hydromancer Kulratha, they attempted to have the great hydra Kai'ju Gahz'rilla attack Stormwind and Thunder Bluff. Adventurers led by Varian Wrynn and Cairne Bloodhoof defeated Gahz'rilla and killed Kulratha.

After the Shattering the Sandfury did not seem to have a particularly active connection to the Twilight's Hammer, having none of the ambassadors present in other cities such as Shadowforge. Neither Alliance nor Horde have made any moves to crush the trolls of Tanaris, although the Bilgewater Cartel goblins attempted to ally with the Dunemaul ogres that occupy several former troll settlements.

Ruuzlu, right hand of Chief Ukorz Sandscalp, planned to use the tribe's scarabs, basilisks, and undead to retake Tanaris for the Sandfury empire.[15]

By the Cataclysm, Zul'Farrak had become a wasteland.[16] In their desperation the Sandfury tribe joined the Zandalari together with the Amani, Gurubashi and Drakkari in their attempt to reclaim their former glory.

Shadra, Kimbul, and Mueh'zala were summoned by the Sandfury trolls at Zul'Farrak so they could sacrifice their prisoners - Aramar Thorne, Makasa Flintwill, Taryndrella, Hackle, and Murky - to them, although the loa refused their sacrifice, much to the trolls' surprise.[17]

The Farraki were a part of the Zandalari Invaders, a group composed of the four main troll tribes united under the Zandalari banner. They arrived upon the northern shores of the mist-shrouded continent of Pandaria. They quickly dispatched their representatives to reforge their old alliance with the mogu. In that expedition, the sand trolls used the name "Farraki".[18][3][4]

Jakra'zet was part of the sand troll forces in Pandaria. Despite the outcome of the Pandaria campaign, Jakra'zet's skill in strategy and tactics could not be denied. Prophet Zul advocated for Jakra'zet to be put on the Zanchuli Council, the high council of the Zandalari, and he was also made general of the Zandalari army.[19]

Once again referred to as the Sandfury, they can be found at Tal'farrak in Zuldazar. They, alongside the Amani and Gurubashi, are harassing merchants by the dock. A Horde adventurer is sent to break these thugs up, before being sent into Tal'farrak to remind the Sandfury of their place.

General Jakra'zet in Vol'dun commands a large host of Sandfury that betrays Rastakhan. Though they are ultimately defeated, their actions lead to the freeing of Mythrax, and later, the destruction of the final seal of G'huun. Despite this, not all Sandfury followed Jakra'zet in his betrayal. After Rastakhan is slain in the Battle of Dazar'alor, Sandfury warriors make up the procession that mourns him. Here, they are neutral to the Horde, fighting back only if attacked first.

After the Fourth War, two Sandfury trolls were captured in the Mithril Order watchtower. They were to be interrogated about the legend of Sul'thraze.[10]

Notes and trivia[]

  • The Sandfury bred sand kittens as pets.
  • The Farraki have an old legend speaking about the anubisath construct Ossirian.[23]
  • The name "Razorbranch tribe" was only mentioned in Chronicle Volume 1, where they appeared as a name on a map showing the troll empires' territories prior to the Great Sundering.[8] At the time, the identity of the tribe was unclear, as the tribe had never been mentioned in any other source. Senior writer Matt Burns stated that the tribe's identity would be revealed in a future volume of Chronicle and that the Razorbranch eventually became something that players had seen in World of Warcraft.[24] However, the tribe went unmentioned in the second and third volumes of Chronicle. Burns later confirmed that the Razorbranch and Sandfury tribes were one and the same.[9]
  • The Sandfury trolls make tempering agents from sandstones.[25]
  • Bwonsamdi, a loa who takes the souls of dead trolls into his care, does not watch over the souls of the Farraki tribe.[26] In spite of this, some Sandfury trolls on Zandalar invoke Bwonsamdi's name when killed.[27][28][29]
  • Unused IDs suggest that during the Legion Invasions, players were planned to be able to summon illusions of several Sandfury trolls.[30]
  • The name Farraki may be a reference to Arrakis of the Dune franchise by Frank Herbert, whose inspiration has been speculated for years.
