Shaladrassil in Val'sharah.

Shaladrassil is a World Tree situated in northern Val'sharah. It was once responsible for protecting the land,[1] but it was corrupted by the Emerald Nightmare[2] during the Burning Legion's third invasion.

The ruined town of Shala'nir was built around it. Darkheart Thicket is underneath it, while the Emerald Nightmare raid can be entered through it.

History

War of the Ancients

After the War of the Ancients, many surviving satyrs were rounded up. Thaon Moonclaw argued to execute them all but was overruled, and they were placed in an eternal sleep deep beneath the roots of Shaladrassil instead.[3]

Legion

Legion This section concerns content related to Legion.

The ancient Oakheart[4] and the green dragon Nythendra served as its protectors, until they were corrupted when the Emerald Nightmare took over the tree.[5] After it fell to the Nightmare, druids from the Dreamgrove went to investigate its roots.[6]

Notes

  • It is not clear whether Nordrassil or Shaladrassil is older. While Nordrassil has been referred to as the first World Tree,[7] Oakheart is stated to be an offshoot of Shaladrassil that has purportedly survived the Great Sundering,[8] which in turn suggests that Shaladrassil predated the Sundering. This would make Shaladrassil older than Nordrassil, as Nordrassil was only planted after the Sundering.

Speculation

This article or section includes speculation, observations or opinions possibly supported by lore or by Blizzard officials. It should not be taken as representing official lore.

With the term "shal'dorei" possibly meaning "Children of Shadow" since Shalla'tor means "Shadow Render", or "Children of the Night" since shal'dorei are also called "Nightborne", it is possible that Shaladrassil means "Crown of Shadow" or "Crown of the Night".
