The Howling Vale

The Howling Vale [52, 37] is a cave located in north-central Ashenvale, just southwest of the border to Felwood. The area is inhabited by Crazed Ancients and Withered Ancients. Shael'dryn hid a piece of  [Dartol's Rod] here at the Shrine of Mel'Thandris. In front of the Shrine an ancient inscription, praising Elune, is written. The shrine has an inscription reading "The truth is a guiding light" in Darnassian.[1]

Background

The Shrine of Mel'Thandris was constructed by the mother of Velinde Starsong, Mel'Thandris's niece. Mel'Thandris was entrusted the Scythe of Elune after it was used to seal away the Druids of the Scythe, and after Mel'Thandris died in the final battle of the War of the Satyr the scythe was stored here. Velinde eventually came here after finding a book in Darnassus describing the war, and discovered the scythe.[1]

Prior to the Cataclysm the vale was home to a tribe of worgen called the Terrowulf, who had completely overtaken the ruined Shrine of Mel'Thandris located there. It was the worgen's chilling calls that gave the vale its new name. Alliance adventurers came here from time to time in search of the legacy of the famed sentinel Velinde Starsong.
