Introduction

This guide will show you how to get your tailoring skill up from 0 to 525. It can be used both for people levelling their profession and high level characters wanting to switch profession.

The guide will use recipes

Created items can either be sold to a vendor, or, if BoE, traded to another player or auctioned. If you are an enchanter, or have an alt or trusted guild-mate, green uncommon or blue rare items can be disenchanted. This can help recoup the cost of the materials, and aid levelling the enchanting skill.

This guide does not tell you how to:

  • make money with tailoring, as the price of materials and created items will vary by server.
  • get all the different recipes from quests, vendors or drops.

Preparation

Most of these recipes require vendor bought components such as threads and dye. These, and learning the recipes from the trainer or buying from a vendor, cost gold. You will either need to farm the components, trade them in trade chat or with friends and guild-mates (often the cheapest option particularly as they may have stuff in the bank they no longer use), or purchase them from the Auction House. If you farm and trade all the materials, expect it to cost a minimum of 250g, excluding recipes you buy from the Auction House.

If you are changing profession, and plan to buy materials from the Auction House, where prices vary considerably from server to server and depending how close to the release of an expansion it is, then expect it to cost around 250g for the training, and for the materials and recipes UPWARDS of:

  • 250g to get tailoring to 300
  • an additional 1500g to 375
  • an additional 2000g to 450
  • an additional 5000g to 525

Patterns at 525 are purchased from the Vendor in Twilight Highlands and cost one Dream Cloth.

Materials Required

Below is a table of the items you will need to level tailoring completely. The exact quantity may vary as some items you will continue to craft once they have turned yellow or green, and skill-up points are not guaranteed.

The minimum amount column shows the minimum amount needed if you would get a skill point every time you make something (amber recipes). The estimated amount column covers recipes that are used when yellow or green. If farming, try to get the estimated amount of cloth. If you are buying all the cloth you need from the auction house, get the minimum amount and only buy more when needed.

Macro to Create Bolts

You may find it useful to create this macro, add it to your toolbar, and change it as the cloth-type changes (make sure you clear any filters such as "has skill up" or it will not work):

#showtooltip Bolt of Linen Cloth
/cast Tailoring
/run for i=1,GetNumTradeSkills() do x,_,y=GetTradeSkillInfo(i); if x =="Bolt of Linen Cloth" then CloseTradeSkill() DoTradeSkill(i,y) break end end

(Tested 4.0.3)

Non-Trainer Recipes

This guide uses trainer-available recipes because they are the easiest to get. However, for some level skills, vendor-bought are needed. For others, vendor bought or dropped recipes (from the Auction House) are simply cheaper to use.

The  [Imbued Netherweave Robe] and  [Imbued Netherweave Tunic] patterns are sold by Arrond who belongs to the Scryers faction. If you are aligned to Aldor, the guards will attack you. However, the recipes are not BoP, so a neutral or Scryers guild member or friend can buy them for you.

Getting from 1 to 50

You will need at least 75  [Bolt of Linen Cloth] for the next stage, making these should easily get you to 50 skill.

If you haven't reached 50 yet, make a  [Bolt of Linen Cloth] and then a  [Linen Belt]. The  [Linen Belt] will give a skill point. Repeat this until 50.

At 50 skill-points, talk to the trainer to become Journeyman Tailor (you must be at least level 10).

Recipes used to get from 0 to 50.

Getting from 50 to 125

Which item you make from 50-75 depends on whether you have plenty of linen, do not care about the vendor price or have an enchanter available to dis-enchant.

Getting from 125 to 200

At 125, you can make  [Bolt of Silk Cloth], which turns gray at 145. Since you're going to need at least 195 bolts to continue skilling up, you should easily reach 145.

Now make  [Azure Silk Hood] to get from 145 to 160,  [Silk Headband] to get from 160 to 170, and  [Formal White Shirt] to get from 170 to 175.

At 175, you can make  [Bolt of Mageweave], which turns gray at 185. To continue skilling up, you will need at least 90 bolts, so making these should easily get you to 185.

Now back to silk. Make  [Crimson Silk Vest] to get from 185 to 200.

Once you hit 200, talk to the trainer to become Artisan Tailor. You have to be level 35 to become Artisan Tailor.

Getting from 200 to 275

First, make  [Crimson Silk Vest] to get from 200 to 205, and  [Crimson Silk Pantaloons] to get to 215.

Make  [Orange Mageweave Shirt] to get to 225.

Make  [Black Mageweave Gloves] to get from 225 to 235 and  [Black Mageweave Shoulders] or Black Mageweave Headbands to get from 235 to 250.

At 250, make  [Bolt of Runecloth] until it turns gray at 260. Use these to make  [Runecloth Belt], which turns yellow at 270, so you should be able to reach 275 using this recipe.

Note:  [Runecloth Belt] disenchants well, so if you have disenchanting resources available, this is a good opportunity to recoup some costs.

Once you hit 275, you will need to speak with the trainers in Outland to become a Master Tailor. You have to be level 50 to become Master Tailor. See Tailoring Trainers for the names and locations.

Getting from 275 to 350

Make  [Runecloth Bag] to get to 280, then make  [Runecloth Gloves] to get to 300.

Note -- if you value  [Rugged Leather] more than  [Runecloth], you can start making  [Runecloth Gloves] at 275 instead of the bags. Also, for those who do not have access to a character with skinning, it may be cheaper to create  [Brightcloth Cloak] as it requires  [Gold Bar] instead of leather which tends to be a considerably cheaper option on most servers. Likewise, if you are also leveling enchanting, both  [Runecloth Gloves] and  [Brightcloth Cloak] disenchant into  [Dream Dust]. Making the gloves and/or cloaks instead of the bags will give you a head start on the approximately 290  [Dream Dust] required to go from enchanting skill level 245-290.

At 300, make  [Bolt of Netherweave], which turns gray at 325. You are going to need at least 430 bolts to get to 360, so this should get you to 325 just fine.

At 325, you can make  [Bolt of Imbued Netherweave], which becomes gray at 340. You are going to need at least 90 bolts to eventually get to 375, so make those. If you are not at 340, make some more bolts until you are. The bolts are needed in most high-level tailoring recipes, so they are not wasted. However, if you do not want to make more bolts than needed for this guide, make  [Netherweave Boots] for those last points to 340 instead.

Make  [Netherweave Robe] to get to 350.

Getting from 350 to 375 The Burning Crusade

Note—If you have Wrath of the Lich King, go to one of the Northrend ports to learn Grandmaster tailoring. Then finish leveling to 375 with  [Bolt of Frostweave]. This recipe will turn gray at 375 but it will not go to waste.

Make  [Netherweave Tunic] to get to 360.

Make  [Imbued Netherweave Robe] or  [Imbued Netherweave Tunic] to get to 375.

  • As noted above, these recipes can only be bought by someone Neutral or Friendly with Scryer, but if you are Aldor, a Scryer friend can buy them for you.
  • For a visual of the items you need to level from 360 to 375 using these recipes, please see the image to the right. This does not include items like  [Rune Thread].
Items Needed To Level From 360-375

A couple of nice money savers:

  • It could be much cheaper to craft  [Bolt of Soulcloth] from 345 to 355. (And use those bolts to craft  [Soulcloth Gloves] later on.) It depends on your server's AH prices and/or how far your guild has gotten in Karazhan.
  • At 350, make your first  [Primal Mooncloth]/ [Spellcloth]/ [Shadowcloth]-- good chance for 3 "free" bumps. (free 'cause you know you're going to do it anyway ;))
  • If you are a caster who is trying to make the 3-piece purple BoP set, make the first piece at 360, and the second piece at 374 (it's still orange, so it might save you multiple attempts), and you will save the cost of making at least 1  [Imbued Netherweave Robe], which are well over 25g worth of materials each.

An alternative if you're just trying to get to 350, for  [Primal Mooncloth]/etc, do the following. You should make a lot of imbued netherweave for skillups, as you will need 3 every 4 days to make your  [Shadowcloth]/etc..., so even though it's expensive, you need it anyway. This also lets you wait a week or two and make cloth to get from 350 to 360, saving you some other funds.

Note—Some will find real viability in making the  [Netherweave Bag] in place of the  [Netherweave Boots] depending on the value of the  [Knothide Leather] and  [Netherweave Bag] on your realm.

Another good way to get your skill from 350 to 375, if you aren't in a rush, is building the Arcanoweave set. These recipes ( [Pattern: Arcanoweave Bracers] [Pattern: Arcanoweave Boots] [Pattern: Arcanoweave Robe] are BoP drops in Tempest Keep: Arcatraz and Mechanar. They seem to be hard on the  [Arcane Dust] but they don't use  [Bolt of Imbued Netherweave], so they're actually a lot easier on the pocketbook.
