From my experience, deflect appears to be an evasion type that is seperate from dodge/parry/block entirely. Attacks that can be dodged/parried/blocked cannot be deflected and vice versa. For instance, the new 51 point protection paladin talent can be deflected, but not dodge/parry/blocked. Additionally, the chance to be deflected seems to be drastically increased if you are using a weapon you have a low skill in. Perhaps the deflect mechanic is for weapon skills that are programmed to behave like spells? Ajonos (talk) 23:59, 20 November 2008 (UTC)
Was fighting a ghostly steward in kharazan (near moroes) and "Deflect" whent by on my Scrolling Combat Text was tanking at the time so I didn't get a chance to look through my combat log till after it was gone. Now I'm intrigued...if I had to guess what I deflected I would guess the attack that the stewards do that makes you drunk. But I have no idea. I'm an arms specc warrior was in def stance at the time with a sheild and sword equipped. Sounds like some aditional testing is needed :) Darbad 23:23, 27 March 2007 (EDT)
- I also got a deflect, two to be precise. After the first one i came to Wowwiki to see what this new form of mitigation was. I can confirm that i deflected the Drunken Haze attack off the bloodmaul brutemasters in Blades edge. Out of three attempts, i deflected two of them, both of them were deflected with both blade flurry AND evasion going, so either of those moves may have had something to do with it. My rogue is 66, the mobs are 65-66. My guess is it is something blizzard is planning on implementing into the game, and its in here by accident seeing as the only reported spottings of a deflect occur with attacks that make you drunk, which are not like other attacks. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Devoveo (talk · contr).
In the article, it is mentioned that Deflects do only occur against drunk effects. However, for example some mobs in Hellfire Penninsula can deflect damage for a short period of time. If this statement only considers player deflects, this should be mentioned. --bfx 18:52, 19 September 2007 (UTC)
- Deflect damage? I think entire attacks/abilities are deflected, a reduction in damage (the stoneskin totem effect or a limited invulnerability potion) would be different. Deflect would roll up on the scrolling combat text and show in the log as well, I'd imagine. It did for me:

The small handful of posts on the topic seemed to believe that Deflect was akin to other mitigation, except for ranged attacks only. But it was different than spell resistance. I'm not sure if it's just a base ability, or if it is modified by Defense or other attributes.
A good place to test deflection:
Sholazar Basin: You can go and fight the http://www.wowhead.com/?npc=28108 (Bonescythe Ravagers), their Bone Saw ability gives atleast 5 deflects over the course of the fight, at least as a protection warrior. Framling (talk) 01:11, 24 December 2008 (UTC)
A bit more info
I had a deflect occur for a Death Knight frost tank just a few minutes ago. The Mob was a cultist corrupter at Sindragosa's Fall in Icecrown. The attack I deflected was called "sharpened bone". It's a 2 second cast attack, physical damage, 40 yard range. This attack can also be dodged. I don't know if it can be blocked, parried or resisted. (Resist is unlikely since it is physical damage.) Weapon skill a possible factor?
Anectodal evidence: I was levelling my paladin alt in Zul'Drak. She was level 78 at the time. I got a one-handed axe from a quest reward, and my weapon skill in it was only 300. Auto attacks would miss and be dodged/parried/blocked normally, but my Shield of the Righteous would very commonly result in a "Deflect" against many different mob types. As my skill in one-handed axes increased, these occurences decreased.
"There are certain items like meta gems or engineering items which can improve it" Which items are these? As an engineer, I can't recall any such mechanic on an engineering item. Also, I don't remember which meta(s) this is on. The item names should be provided for this. -Grynd (talk) 07:31, 4 April 2009 (UTC)

Deflect: magical Parry
I had always thought this was common knowledge, but it seems not. Deflect is essentially the magical version of a "Parry". It functions precisely the same way, but only pops up for magical attacks that use the melee hit table. ( being a particularly notable one). This is confused a little bit by Hunters Deflecting seemingly everything. I think that's a special case, and should be veiwed as such. - Okay, here are the removed bits.
- 'Deflect'is a little understood and rarely used mechanic which negates all effects of spells or melee attacks. It is not known what is the chance of deflection nor if it requires any type of weapon or offhand item equipped. It has been compared to the parry rating, which may affect the chance to deflect. The possibility of a deflect may lie in the random distribution of excess parriable attack damage, a parry being an offensive force being met by a defensive force head on; versus a deflection, where by the offensive force is redirected onto a tangent, away from the target, possibly a function of movement and position. Deflect also appears more prevalent with ranged physical attacks and is speculated on the World of Warcraft forums that it may replace Parry in ranged melee or attack situations. It is also speculated that the mechanic is more common with low hit rating.
- Unlike Parrying, when a target Deflects an attack, the target's next melee auto-attack does not seem to get sped up.
