"Old tongue" controversy

I just want to explain my statement in the article where I claim that it's strange how Pandaria pandaren and Wandering Isle pandaren speak the same language today. If "Old tongue" Pandaren was spoken on the Wandering Isle, and evolved into modern day Pandaren, how is it then possible that Pandaria Pandaren evolved exactly the same way so that the two groups of pandaren now speak the same language, and not two different evolution branches of the "Old ongue" Pandaren language? --Oponyxal (talk) 15:57, 4 October 2012 (UTC)

  • The safest assumption would be that the "old tongue" was already a dead language by the time the pandaren discovered the Wandering Isle, and songs were composed in it simply because it was a "prestigious", "scholarly" language, the same way as Ancient Greek and Latin were used in Europe long after these languages fell out of use among common people. Of course, if we are going to be completely realistic this still doesn't make any sense - Wandering Isle pandaren and Pandaria pandaren seem to have been apart for millennia, and in real life this is more than enough time for languages to diverge so much that their speakers are completely unable to understand each other. But then again, just look at the trolls, who can still speak Zandali and understand each other quite well.PRH (talk) 23:09, 8 October 2012 (UTC)
