Galen and Trol'kalar

Trol'kalar in the hands of Galen Trollbane.

Trol'kalar (or Trol'Kalar)[1] is the legendary sword of the Trollbanes, the royal family of Stromgarde.[2] It is a weapon of great power[3] whose name means "troll slayer" in the ancient tongue of Arathor.[4][5]

History[]

The Troll Wars[]

Ignaeus Trollbane, general of the Arathorian Empire and ancestor of the Trollbane line, famously wielded Trol'kalar against the Amani Empire during the Troll Wars.[4] The sword was Arathor's greatest weapon.[6]

Zengu

Zengu, the Darkspear hunter tasked with obtaining Trol'kalar.

Millennia later, Trol'kalar was carried by Thoras Trollbane, King of Stromgarde,[7][8] until he was murdered by his son, Prince Galen,[9] during the Third War.[3] Thoras and the sword were buried in Trollbane's Tomb, in the Crypt of Stromgarde Keep. Trol'kalar was magically encased in a stone sheath, held in the grip of its master's stone likeness, and could only be unlocked with the sigil of Ignaeus.[10][6] To protect the sword, Galen split the sigil into four pieces. He kept the sigil of Trollbane on his own person,[11] entrusted the sigil of Arathor to Lieutenant Valorcall,[12] and divided the sigil of Thoradin into pieces which he dispersed among the Stromgarde Militia.[13] The fourth piece, the sigil of Strom, was stolen by the Syndicate.[4]

With Thoras dead and Stromgarde in ruins, the Darkspear tribe sought to steal Trol'kalar so that they could use it in their coming battles against the Gurubashi trolls of Zul'Gurub. Vol'jin himself sent the hunter Zengu to the Arathi Highlands to procure the sword.[14] Zengu dispatched agents of the Horde to hunt down the portions of the sigil of Ignaeus,[4][13][12] culminating in killing Galen himself to claim his piece.[11] The agents then used the combined sigil to release Trol'kalar from Trollbane's Tomb[10] and bring it back to Zengu, who planned to deliver the blade to Nimboya at Grom'gol Base Camp.[6]

Cataclysm[]

Zengu did not get far, however. When he attempted to leave Arathi, the forces of Stromgarde simply killed him, took back the sword,[2] and returned it to Trollbane's Tomb. This time the tomb was sealed with the sigil of Trollbane, which like its predecessor was divided into four pieces.[7] Prince Galen, resurrected as a Forsaken, directed Horde soldiers to once again find the divided sigils and reobtain Trol'kalar[2] for his new master, Sylvanas Windrunner.[5] As before, the sigil of Thoradin had been divided among Stromgarde's soldiers[15] while the sigil of Arathor had again been given to Lieutenant Valorcall.[16] The sigil of Strom had been stolen again by the Syndicate,[5] and the fourth piece was still held by Galen personally. With the combined sigil, the agents retrieved Trol'kalar from its tomb and gave it to Galen,[7] who promised to once again take up the duty of guarding the blade and claimed that it would be used as a weapon to bring death to the living in Sylvanas' name.[17]

Regicide - Galen

Galen unleashing Trol'kalar's power.

In reality, Galen meant to use Trol'kalar to legitimize his own claim to the throne of Stromgarde. With the sword in hand, he rebelled against Sylvanas and took over Stromgarde Keep with his undead subjects. During the third invasion of the Burning Legion, the Knights of the Ebon Blade sought to raise Thoras as one of the Four Horsemen, but they needed Trol'kalar to open the king's tomb.[18] Galen agreed to grant the Deathlord, Thassarian, and Nazgrim access in exchange for them ridding Stromgarde of invading Witherbark trolls. However, he then betrayed the death knights[8] and tried to kill the Deathlord with Trol'kalar. The Deathlord executed him, used the blade to open the crypt,[19] and resurrected Thoras before returning to the Ebon Hold.[9] It is not mentioned what happened to Trol'kalar after this. As far as the SI:7 are aware, the sword's present whereabouts are unknown.[3]

In the RPG[]

This bastard sword is notched and old, but its appearance belies its sharpness and balance. Trol'Kalar pulses with a dim white radiance, almost as if alive. The weapon's name means “Troll Slayer” in an ancient tongue. The scion of the Trollbane family, Prince Galen of Stromgarde, wields Trol'Kalar against forsaken, the Syndicate, murlocs, and ogres instead of its traditional foes. The blade still proves deadly.[20]

When the Trollbane family manor was hit with a surprise bandit raid while much of the house guard was out fighting the Horde, a human servant called Yernim Weltom hid the family's artifacts in the kitchen, filling the priceless chalice of opal voices with gravy, tossing the ancient sword Trol'kalar into the pile of pig offal and putting the cloak of elemental protection on himself and jumping into the massive kitchen fire to hide. Prince Liam, grandfather of Galen Trollbane, was so impressed with his servant's ingenuity in hiding the castle's artifacts that he appointed him Caretaker of Artifacts with a staff of two, and commanded the young servant to come up with a better plan to protect the artifacts.[21]

Powers[]

When a troll is slashed by this bastard sword, it cannot regenerate as it would when hurt by a common melee weapon. The wounds heal at their normal rate, just as if the troll victim didn't count with additional regeneration powers at all. The Trol'kalar also procs additional holy damage to all evil creatures (trolls included).[citation needed]

The Trol'kalar curses any evil creature attempting to use it with one negative level (debuff). This curse inflicts the wielder as long as the sword is wielded. This one negative level curse cannot be cured nor dispelled, it will affect the wielder as long as he has the sword at hands.[citation needed]

Speculation[]

This article or section includes speculation, observations or opinions possibly supported by lore or by Blizzard officials. It should not be taken as representing official lore.

Thoras may have taken Trol'kalar and transformed it into the runeblade he is seen wielding as a death knight. Trol'kalar is last mentioned being used by the Deathlord to open the way to Trollbane's Tomb in N Death knight [10-45] The King Rises. When they raise Thoras, he does not initially have a weapon; however, the next time they encounter him in Acherus, he is already equipped with an unnamed runeblade.
