World of Warcraft Expansion Concepts
Below are various expansion concepts I've developed over the years. In them I've shared many of my ideas about what adventures the heroes of Azeroth might undertake.
The ancient kingdom of Azjol-Nerub flourished for millennia beneath the frozen land of Northrend. The evil Lich King and his Scourge ended the reign of the nerubians, and seized their dead to bolster his fledgling army. The Spider Kingdom is dead... but many powerful forces still battle over its remains.
When the Cataclysm tore apart Azeroth, the devastation reached even the distant roof of the world. Armies of nerubians began to rise from Azeroth's underworld, laying waste to the surface. For years the nerubian race had been teetering on the edge of extinction, but this new army is vast and innumerable, made up of a new generation of living nerubians. Dedicated to the worship of the Old Gods and to sweeping away the races of the surface world, the nerubians are a deadly power that has erupted back into the world and threaten all living things.
World of Warcraft: The Spider Kingdom will take adventurers into the dark underworld of Azeroth, exploring the hidden depths of the ancient kingdom of Azjol-Nerub... and more. Dread forces have been unleashed by Deathwing's Cataclysm, and primordial horrors from Azeroth's past are on the rise. The Spider Kingdom will be the battleground that these enemies must be fought and defeated on, less they swarm forth and overwhelm the world.
Ten thousand years ago, Azshara, queen of the night elves, held absolute dominion over ancient Kalimdor, the realm of eternal starlight. Beloved by her people, basking in the power of the great Well of Eternity, Azshara dreamed of an everlasting rule under the stars. Her lust for power and veneration would be the doom of her kingdom as her reckless use of the Well's magical energy drew the Burning Legion to Kalimdor. The demon hordes ravaged her people while Azshara herself was twisted further into darkness by the influence of the Burning Legion's leader, the dark titan Sargeras.
Ultimately Azshara's mad ambitions were thwarted, and the world was pulled back from the brink of destruction by the actions of her own defiant former subjects - Tyrande Whisperwind, priestess of Elune, and the Stormrage brothers Malfurion and Illidan. By the actions of these companions, the Burning Legion were cast from the world and the Well of Eternity destroyed. Azshara's dreams crumbled along with her kingdom as the land was sundered by the collapse of the Well.
Swallowed by the sea, Azshara and her followers hovered on the edge of death. But while Sargeras and his demons had been banished, another evil stirred in the deepest depths of the ocean. Faced with certain death or the embrace of a profound and terrible darkness, Azshara made her choice - she and her court were transformed into the monstrous naga and made agents of the Old Gods, the malefic beings imprisoned an eternity ago in the darkest corners of the world.
For 10,000 years, the monstrous Azshara and her naga servants have been hidden in the depths of the sea, dwelling in the underwater kingdom of Nazjatar far from the light of the stars. For 10,000 years, Azshara's anger, hatred, and lust for power have been fed by the whispers of the Old Gods. Now, at long last, they tell her that her time has come. She will again rule all lands beneath the light of the stars.
The defenders of Azeroth have protected their home from evils without and within. The marauding Iron Horde, the malefic Old Gods, and the all-consuming Burning Legion have all been driven from the world. Azeroth entered a period of brief peace.
Watching from the Twisting Nether, the ethereals of the lost world of K'aresh observed a building calamity - the dark power of the Void was growing in strength, rising up from the depths of reality to engulf countless worlds. Within its blackest fathoms the Void Lords lay, hungrily devouring all light and life and dragging all things down into oblivion for their own twisted amusement. The ethereals recalled how their homeworld of K'aresh was devoured by the Void and its dark masters, and watched with anguish as more worlds were threatened with the same fate. Gathering together the scattered factions of their people, the ethereals pooled all their knowledge and resources to determine how to halt this latest expansion of the Void.
In the northern mountains of the Twilight Highlands, a roiling hurricane of darkness raged, spilling out the power of the Void. As the forces of the Alliance and the Horde drew close, glimmering craft slipped out of arcane portals bearing ethereals to the field. Joining the gathered forces of Azeroth, the ethereals offered their military strength, their arcane power, and their knowledge of the Void and its denizens. To spare the universe from eternal darkness, they would lead the heroes of Azeroth into the Void...
Gaze into the infinite expanse of the Timeways, and see a history where events unfolded differently. There is no false history, only different paths. In the end, everything is true...
The queen of the naga, Azshara, unleashed a tide of darkness upon the world for the glory of her dark master, the Old God N'Zoth. Though the queen was struck down and her dark master's body buried in his tomb beneath the waves, the Old Gods are not ordinary flesh and blood. N'Zoth's black essence soared free of his sundered flesh, just as the Old God had planned, and now festers within the Emerald Dream, the living soul of the world of Azeroth. Within the Dream, N'Zoth builds a new form and a new army, spreading the living corruption known as the Nightmare, and schemes to bring about his ultimate victory.
The very soul of Azeroth, and all of creation beyond it, now hangs in the balance. The champions of the Alliance and the Horde must venture into the mystical realm and confront the Nightmare and its dark master directly.
Face your fears, or fall into a nightmare from which you will never awaken...
A re-imagining of the Spider Kingdom expansion concept. Note - the work is largely incomplete at present and likely to remain that way.
The heroes of Azeroth have returned from far-off realms and cosmic dimensions to stand united once again in defense of their world. The malevolent Old Gods burrow deep beneath Azeroth's surface, seeking the slumbering goddess at her core. The champions of the Alliance and the Horde must unite with all the allies and resources they can bring to bear and delve deep into the heart of their world to burn out the corrupting darkness of the Old Gods. If they fail, their world will be lost, and a new dark god will be born into the cosmos to enslave it forever.
This, I just had to get out of my system. Heavily inspired by Heroes of the Storm and Wildstar (shine on, you crazy space diamond).
The Titanforged are beings of living stone and metal, forged by the servants of the Titans for the defense of Azeroth. Titanforged wield the powers of the Titans themselves - runes of order and creation, the unbreakable fortitude of living stone, and the thunderous living lightning that energizes all the Titans' children. Some Titanforged even dare to embrace the Curse of Flesh, the great contagion of the Old Gods that turns living stone and metal to flesh and blood, that they may turn the powers of corruption back against their wicked masters.
Titanforged are beings created by Odyn, who was created to be the supreme protector of Azeroth by the Titans themselves. Odyn has imbued his creations with a portion of the Titans' own cosmic might, gifting them the endurance of mountains and the durability of iron and stone. They can weather immense damage, overcoming the most lethal and belligerent of foes through sheer hardiness and determination. When they strike, it is with the force of a thunderstorm, laying waste to the foe in a cataclysmic burst of Titanic fury. Those Titanforged who unleash the power of the Curse of Flesh add the cancerous tenacity of the Old Gods to their already durable forms, granting them powers of regeneration and evolution as well.
Not my usual thing, but I got inspired to try creating a class concept. Mainly focused on lore and flavor rather than balance. Who wants to sweat all those numbers (yuck).
Herein lies the chronicle of the Titan Worlds. A narrative that explores the distant future of the Warcraft universe. The world of Azeroth is a faded memory, but new worlds - the Titan Worlds - shine like jewels in the Great Dark Beyond, filled with battle and adventure.
