The war against the Zandalari broke out in the period following the Cataclysm, when the home island of the Zandalar tribe was destroyed in the aftermath and out of desperation the Zandalari moved to take advantage of the chaos by joining the tribes into a mighty troll empire. When the mists surrounding Pandaria vanished the Zandalari quickly sent aid to their ancient allies and former rulers of the continent, the mogu empire. The ultimate goal on Pandaria seems to be establishing themselves a new homeland.
The days when great troll empires stretched across ancient Kalimdor are long past. Millennia of war and internal strife have stripped these nations of their power, lands, and glory. As Azeroth recovers from the destruction of the Cataclysm, the world's divided troll populations face a bleak future. These dark times have spurred the trolls of the Zandalari, the historically wise and scholarly tribe from which all trolls originated, to take drastic action. They have embarked on a bold crusade to save their race by uniting trolls into a single mighty empire. With the Zandalari's aid, the fallen capitals of the Gurubashi and Amani nations—Zul'Gurub and Zul'Aman—are already rebuilding, replenishing their forces for a bloody campaign to expand their territories.
Yet Vol'jin and his Darkspear trolls are not aligned with the Zandalari. They have sworn to stand with their Horde comrades—and even work with the Alliance—should the trolls ignite a new war on Azeroth. Soon, Vol'jin might be forced to act on his promise, for if the Gurubashi and Amani are left to their own devices, the world will know the legendary strength and savagery of the ancient troll empires once again. This event, however, is stopped by the Horde, Alliance, and the combined efforts of the Darkspear Tribe and the Farstriders, but the Zandalari continued their efforts elsewhere.

Sway over the Gurubashi
Empowered by the Zandalari's offer the Gurubashi launched on all-out attack to claim Stranglethorn Vale for themselves. In Northern Stranglethorn Bambala, Fort Livingston, Nesingwary's Expedition, Grom'gol Base Camp, and the Rebel Camp came under attack by serpents sent by High Priest Venoxis. High Priestess Kilnara sent panthers to attack the Rebel Camp and Grom'gol while the panther Mauti attacked the hunters at Nesingwary's Expedition. Both Grom'gol and the Rebel Camp later came under attack by Gurubashi trolls led by Bloodlord Mandokir. After heroes of the Horde and Alliance beat back the Gurubashi attack, they were sent to the Cape of Stranglethorn which faced its own troubles.
Zanzil the Outcast aids the Gurubashi by turning the inhabitants of both Hardwrench Hideaway and the Explorers' League Digsite into voodoo zombies by poisoning the food in each town. After saving their respective towns adventurers will be sent to speak to a troll (Vol'jin for the Horde and Ghaliri for the Alliance) who is warning Baron Revilgaz and Booty Bay about the Gurubashi.
Darkspear agents inside Zul'Gurub have discovered that Jin'do is wrestling Hakkar the Soulflayer into submission, holding him by spirit chains and stripping out his power into himself. They enlist adventurers to put an end to Jin'do's mad plans once and for all. Upon destroying the spiritual chains holding the Soulflayer in place, Hakkar turns upon Jin'do, and utterly destroys him, leaving only the corpse of Jin'do the Broken. Hakkar then returns the adventurers to the mortal realm, promising to deal with them another time, before vanishing. Though Hakkar is free, the Zandalari have been dealt a major defeat at Zul'Gurub.
Sway over the Amani
With the aid of the Zandalari, a new troll empire was brewing, spearheaded by Warlord Daakara of the Amani tribe in Zul'Aman. Vol'jin has declined this offer, and instead joined forces with the Ranger-General of Silvermoon, Halduron Brightwing, and his Farstriders to counter the threat this new empire poses. In turn, Halduron has called upon Vereesa Windrunner and her rangers to join the battle, and the three can be seen planning their next move on the outskirts of Zul'Aman.
After deciding an appropriate battle plan Vol'jin personally leads a strike force into Zul'Aman and with the aid of adventurers puts an end to Daakara and the Zandalari's efforts within Zul'Aman.
In Hinterlands the local Forest trolls of the Vilebranch and the Witherbark tribes had sided with the Amani and tried to expand their territories. However they were eventually defeated and lost much of their grounds both to the Wildhammer Clan and the Revantusk tribe trolls who remained loyal to the Horde.
Mists of Pandaria

Re-establishing the ties with mogu
Long before the rise of the Pandaren Empire, the Zandalari had been allies of the mogu, the iron-fisted rulers of Pandaria, and fought against the pandaren when they overthrew their mogu overlords. Yet, the Zandalari lost access to the area when the mists appeared and sealed off the entirety of Pandaria from outsiders.
Now, as the power of the mists has been weakened by Deathwing's upheaval, the Zandalari forces have returned to Pandaria, seemingly with the intention of coming to their aid of their ancient allies. But it seems that the Zandalari have other motives for returning besides aiding the mogu...
Rise of the Thunder King
With the loss of the isle of Zandalar, as well as the leadership of Amani and Gurubashi, the Zandalari have decided to change the course of their campaign to the land once ruled by their former mogu allies, Pandaria. The expedition comprising of all troll tribes united under the Zandalari banner arrived upon the northern shores of the mist-shrouded continent and quickly dispatched their representatives to reforge the old alliance. Zandalar spiritbinders quickly started to re-animate dormant terracotta statues to create an unstoppable army, but the true intention of the Zandalari is to resurrect the first emperor of the mogu, Lei Shen, known also as the Thunder King to gain his help in conquering Pandaria for themselves and establish the new Mogu-Zandalari dominion on the ruins of Pandaren Empire. After his resurrection, he unites the Zandalari and most of the scattered mogu clans under his banner. Craving conquest, Lei Shen and his minions have launched a full-scale assault on Pandaria in a last attempt to restore mogu dominion.
Shadows of the Horde
With Lei Shen once again among the living, a force of Zandalari led by Khal'ak moved to revive his warlords that rested within the Tu Shen Burial Ground. They once again assaulted Zouchin Village to secure a landing site for ships coming from the Isle of Thunder, but along the way found themselves fighting the Shado-Pan, a human named Tyrathan Khort, and most surprisingly of all, a fellow troll: Vol'jin.
Khal'ak attempted to sway Vol'jin to their side, and the Zandalari successfully revived Warlord Kao. Kao and the Zandalari returned to the Isle of Thunder with Vol'jin, Tyrathan, Chen Stormstout, and Brother Cuo as prisoners. But their prisoners escaped, in the process destroying a large section of the island's harbor.
Khal'ak's forces returned to Kun-Lai Summit to attack their escaped prisoners. They found themselves facing The Thirty-three, and despite vastly outnumbering them the Zandalari fled when Vol'jin thrust his hand through Khal'ak's throat, killing her.
Sometime after the events at the Isle of Thunder, the Zandalari have turned their focus on rallying the Frostmane tribe of Dun Morogh against Ironforge but their plans were thwarted by Moira Thaurissan and Varian Wrynn. Scouts of the SI:7 had noticed a massive army of the Frostmane tribe seeking to lay siege to Ironforge. The trolls had tried to delay the Dark Iron's army by creating a frost storm preventing Moira's army from reaching the village but the King's champions managed to kill the troll sorcerer and thus ended the storm. When the storm ended, the Dark Iron's army charged into the village and slaughtered all the remaining trolls inside ending the Frostmane threat for good.
