Forums: Village pump → Between the cross and the sword

The title of this discussion is the lusophone term to "between the devil and the deep sea" and a interlingual parody try to start a discuss about the extra space between the name of an entity and the cross of death inert to it. ShadowShade81413 is going around adding a space between IconSmall Human Male Character X or Mage Faction Y and the "†" what symbolize it's end in warboxes and infoboxes. Examples are here, here and here. Here he explains one of his argues. Belanal did something similar here. For me this is an unnecessary move just to add unnecessary lines with no content to make the article unnecessary longer. What anyone thinks about it? Well for me, adding NPC tags is an unnecessary move just to add unnecessary brackets and unnecessary popups. Snark aside, I don't mind the extra space. Xporc (talk) 09:08, 24 March 2017 (UTC)
I knew you would make some comment about it. But, when you make an article unnecessary longer, it takes more time to mouse-scroll it because of the size of the lateral bar. It is because of it I try to put images of small articles that have infoboxes on left like here. In this case you don't even have to scroll to see the whole article; you see everything for once. I'm trying to solve this cross-space problem to soft our work. He want the space and I'm not. And now? How we solve this problem? I do not want stay in edit war with him for long. I appreciate your will to reduce the size of infoboxes, but I don't really know if one extra space is gonna make then longer than they are now. For example, you try to cram absolutely every single protagonists of each conflicts in infoboxes, if you really wanted to make them easier to read you'd try to make them less loaded with information.
Giving information - and were it is possible - is the meaning of a wiki. And, as grain by grain the hen fills her belly, it's not just one extra space. As you said below it can take one line more than it should to each espace. Gabrirt (talk · contributions) 16:03, 28 March 2017 (UTC)
Putting the picture on the left on small articles is ugly: your eye is expecting the article to start at the same place as every other article on the wiki, but then it is confused because it sees a picture instead of the starting text. It feels uncomfortable to view.
This is not my feeling, to be included. First thing on looking to an article - and the first thing on looking to everything - is identify to what are you looking on. Gabrirt (talk · contributions) 16:03, 28 March 2017 (UTC)
As for the edit war, you can see it this way: I, myself, am angered by your abuse of NPC tags. But we've reached a consensus: I let you add them to lists and infoboxes as long as you keep them out of literally everything else. That's the wiki way, we don't have to like everything someone else does. So now, you and someone else disagrees on an issue. The correct way to handle this would be wait until more people can discuss this instead of trying to undo everything your "opponent" did. Xporc (talk) 15:05, 25 March 2017 (UTC)
After comparing the Third War article, I think not having a space between the name and the cross is better actually. Otherwise, you risk having the cross on the line after the name, while if you remove the space the cross is always on the same line as the deceased entity. Xporc (talk) 15:42, 25 March 2017 (UTC)
This is elementary. How much time should I wait to his or anyone else response? Gabrirt (talk · contributions) 16:07, 28 March 2017 (UTC)
Would be nice if you could try to talk to him on his talk page, since he doesn't seem to have noticed this thread. Xporc (talk) 17:18, 28 March 2017 (UTC)

Why don't we create an official template like this one, that will automatically put " †" whether there is a space or not, thus using the cross in the proper way and it doesn't go on the next line. ShadowShade81413 (talk) 16:35, 2 April 2017 (UTC)

That's... actually a pretty good suggestion, and I feel stupid for not having though of it before. Xporc (talk) 16:50, 2 April 2017 (UTC)
Meh. I created a  † template, even if I put " †" as the template text and stick it right next to a word, the cross will go on the next line :( Xporc (talk) 19:41, 2 April 2017 (UTC)
Can't something be added so that it reads the space as an invisible letter or something? ShadowShade81413 (talk) 23:01, 2 April 2017 (UTC)
You rock man! After a bit of searching, you're right, there exists a non-breaking space in HTML. I added that HTML code to the template and now that cross is both separated by a space and still on the same line! Note that since I updated the template, the Third War page will have to wait a bit before the template editing is applied to the page. Xporc (talk) 08:16, 3 April 2017 (UTC)
Thanks :) I knew I heard about something like that before. I tried using Alt+0160 but it doesn't work here. Replacing all the daggers with the KIA template is now on my to do list. ShadowShade81413 (talk) 16:12, 3 April 2017 (UTC)
Well, I still detected a problem and I have at least one example: If you add an normal short cross on the side of IconSmall Archimonde Archimonde the Defiler in the Third War article, the citation ends on the same line. If a Template:KIA is added it takes one line more - and this is the only example I have search until now, may there be others. Maybe create a template is better than a long cross, but it's still make some things longer anyway. Gabrirt (talk · contributions) 19:26, 3 April 2017 (UTC)
