Forums: Village pump → Dates?

heya! i know this is quite a busy time for everybody, but i was wondering what you guys would think of adding a birthdate/deathdate line in the character infobox? kinda like the "date" line in {{War}}. i find it neat to know this stuff, and having it at a glance on character pages would be nice

for the sake of not overcomplicating it, it could probably just be a single "string"-type parameter {{{date}}}, with instructions added to the template's copy/paste version along the lines of "Format as [Birthdate] [BDP or ADP]<ref>[source]</ref>–[Deathdate] [BDP or ADP]<ref>[source]</ref>. Leave a blank after the endash if character is still alive."

or it could be two parameters on separate lines, {{{birthdate}}} to correspond to a "Born" line and {{{deathdate}}} to correspond to a "Died" line, with similar instructions for editors. this one might work out better since we don't actually know both dates for every character, and it could allow for the addition of location details (e.g. deathdate=blabla ADP, Battle for Andorhal) --Eithris (talk) 18:37, 6 November 2017 (UTC)

Very nice idea, the dates are currently in the notes section, but I'd like to have them in infoboxes now! From the two options I like the second option a bit better. Mordecay (talk) 18:45, 6 November 2017 (UTC)
Arn't the dates in WoW constantly retconned? Can we truly say the battle of Andorhal happened in a particular year? Xporc (talk) 20:22, 6 November 2017 (UTC)
ye, that part was mostly just an example of how we might add where/how a person died (or were born) next to when they died P: i guess it was a poor example since we don't actually have any confirmed dates on that particular battle
heck, personally i'd say it doesn't even have to be an exact year; there are a lot of things we know the approximate time of, or we know that they happened before/after other things that do have confirmed dates. so for example Ursoc's date of death could be given as "Around 10,000 BDP, War of the Ancients". or Kang's date of birth could be "Sometime before 12,000 BDP, in the Mogu Empire" because we know he started the Pandaren Revolution in 12,000 BDP
tho... maybe i'm overcomplicating things again, eheh. it's a habit. do you think it'd be better to leave it as just dates, and leave the where/how stuff for the actual article to explain? --Eithris (talk) 00:30, 7 November 2017 (UTC)
I dunno. I'm not sure it's really relevant to add the time of death, since times are known to vary, about the place of death... This also seems more adapted for the main body of text rather than the infobox. Then again I don't want to ruin your fun :o Xporc (talk) 18:33, 7 November 2017 (UTC)
It's an interesting idea, but I think I agree that locations of birth/death are more suited for the main body of the article, and that dates are often too vague or retconned too often to add them to the infobox. I wouldn't terribly mind if a date parameter was added to infoboxes, but I don't think it adds that much value. -- IconSmall TrollDeathKnight Male DeludedTroll (talkcontribs) 09:21, 8 November 2017 (UTC)
