Forums: Village pump → Infobox town & Infobox faction - data on founding

Hello,

I'd like to suggest that someone with more expertise than mine would add a field to the Infobox template so people could specify cities' and countries' year of founding / establishment (where it's known). If you feel like it, 'Year of destruction' could also be added. I know most related information is very vague, but I'd prefer it to be easier to find.

Thanks, Goldskullb (talk) 13:32, 11 January 2020 (UTC)

Meh, sounds unnecessary. How many pages would use it? Xporc (talk) 17:33, 11 January 2020 (UTC)
I agree with Xporc. -- IconSmall TrollDeathKnight Male DeludedTroll (talkcontribs) 17:45, 11 January 2020 (UTC)
I don't mind the idea, but I'm not sure how many cases this would be useful in. PeterWind (talk) 17:57, 11 January 2020 (UTC)
I know the approximate time of founding for about 30 towns or nations established by native races on Azeroth. (In case you don't consider information such as Dalaran being founded sometime 2000 years ago too vague to display.) We can deduce the age of every settlement built by people not native to a certain planet or continent. (ex: orcs and humans on Kalimdor and Northrend, Azerothians on Outland, Draenei everywhere etc.) I hope that counts for something. Goldskullb (talk) 12:38, 12 January 2020 (UTC)
In order to not have too big infoboxes with bloated information, it might be better to add this in the notes, history or introduction sections. --Ryon21 (talk) 13:12, 12 January 2020 (UTC)

I have another idea on how to implement it. The reason I brought it up, is because I see this wiki not only as a guide to WoW players, but also a possible guide to people who might want to create story scenarios and campaigns in WC Reforged. For them a new page containing the data I mentioned (perhaps a table that can be sorted) might be more useful. It could initially be linked to the Timeline page.

Sorry if it's frustrating that I insist on things that don't help WoW players, but I don't play WoW, so I can't help you with that. This I can do. Goldskullb (talk) 14:40, 12 January 2020 (UTC)

Oh, don't worry. The pedia is more for the lore than gameplay tbh, so it's cool you are helping with it. And I guess a table about that could be interesting. Maybe for now you could use the Settlement page. Or if other editors prefer it, you could start creating it in your user page to see how it would look like. --Ryon21 (talk) 16:02, 12 January 2020 (UTC)
Then one more question, at least until others give their opinions: I need another page with a table to use its source. Can you point me to one or is the source the same on other wikis? Goldskullb (talk) 16:27, 12 January 2020 (UTC)
you mean like, how to create a table? if that’s it then yeah, general markup is the same for most wikis. the only specific thing i can think of for ours is custom styling classes; most tables on wowpedia use class="darktable", or class="darktable zebra" for a striped version —Eithris (talk) 17:51, 13 January 2020 (UTC)
Yeah, that's what I meant. Thanks! I didn't think of it back then to check whether I can insert a table from the toolbar. Goldskullb (talk) 20:12, 14 January 2020 (UTC)
For what its worth, I like Goldskullb's original idea. Wikipedia does this for real world places, using properties like |established_title1 and |established_date1 so its possible to provide meaningful dates for a few important events (like original settlement, incorporation as a city, and destruction). I don't know it would be terribly worthwhile to go around to all the articles and starting putting dates on, but it couldn't hurt for "notable" places like Stormwind where it is very significant to the game lore that the city was razed (WCI) and rebuilt (pre-Vanilla).
