Warlock minion

Warlock minions are summonable combat pets for a warlock. All minions are considered members of the demon creature type. There are seven different minions, including five permanent pets (seven if you include minions made permanent by [Grimoire of Supremacy]) : Imp, Voidwalker, Succubus, Felhunter and Felguard.

Infernal and Doomguard are guardians, and so can only be summoned for short periods at a time, unless [Grimoire of Supremacy] is selected.

Info about types

Warlocks must choose which one of the available permanent minions to have active at any time. Doomguards and Infernals function as guardians, and may be used along with other demonic pets.

Only Demonology warlocks are able to summon the Felguard, through the [Summon Felguard] ability.

Removed from game The subject of this section has been removed from World of Warcraft in patch 7.0.3.

At Level 75 warlocks could choose the talent [Grimoire of Supremacy], which replaced their demonic minions by more powerful ones. Those more powerful minions had the same mechanics, they just dealt 20% more damage and their abilities were more powerful.

Minion skill sets

Warlocks can summon a variety of minions, each exhibiting different skill sets which are useful in different situations:

  • Imp (Level Obtained: 1)
The Imp's main role is a support minion, designed to do additional damage alongside the caster via its [Firebolt] attack. The Imp is very fragile and will die quickly if attacked. Other Imp abilities: [Singe Magic], [Flee]. The Imp is a damaging minion in the warlock's arsenal, at least until he runs out of Mana. At max level, the Imp is generally favoured by Destruction warlocks.
This demon deals little damage, but has very good armor and hit points. He is an excellent tank, and is able to keep aggro. The Voidwalker's main ability, [Torment], is a taunt that causes enemies to attack the Voidwalker. At higher levels, however, it is unable to hold a mob's attention for very long. Additional Voidwalker spells include Sacrifice, which reduces your Voidwalker's health but creates a 30-second damage absorption shield for the warlock, and [Consume Shadows], which is an out-of-combat self-heal for the Voidwalker.
The Felguard is the most powerful permanent Warlock minion. This demon has abilities helpful in PvP as well as when soloing. His tanking abilities allow him to serve as a low-level tank for soloing, but not for low-level dungeons groups.
The Succubus is replete with spells that deal damage and mesmerize the enemy in different ways. Her first ability, [Lash of Pain], is a direct-damage, low-mana cast that deals shadow damage to her target. Other spells include [Seduction], which charms a target for 15 seconds (or until attacked). The Succubus also has a self-only [Lesser Invisibility] spell. At higher levels the succubus is not a good means of using Crowd Control. Her low health and armor makes her easy to kill, thereby eliminating the Crowd Control ability and leaving the warlock without a pet.
The Felhunter is your anti-caster minion, with high magic resist and abilities to Counterspell ( [Spell Lock]), and remove buffs from enemies ( [Devour Magic]). The Warlock employing a meleeing Felhunter can also use [Shadow Bite] to give amplified direct damage to enemies. One could also use [Fel Intelligence] to increase Intellect and mana regeneration of all party member close to the demon. At max level, the Felhunter is usually favoured by Affliction warlocks.
Infernal deals better melee damage than the Succubus, and has higher HP, fire immunity, and armor than a Voidwalker. The Infernal will fall from the sky and fight for the warlock for 45 seconds before despawning. The Infernal deals strictly melee damage, combined with an immolation effect that hurts all enemies nearby. Summoning an Infernal stuns all nearby targets for 2 sec and deals instant damage.
The Doomguard has the highest HP and AC. A properly used Doomguard can take out entire camps of enemies at a time before perishing.

Minion scaling

As a warlock improves their stats, their minion also improves[citation needed] 

  • Minions inherit their masters' stats as follows:

Spell hit Spell hit, physical hit, expertise, being capped will cap your minion for all three stats, see below for details
  • Minions' offensive spells generally gain bonus damage equal to 100% of the minions' spell power, and minions gain 1 auto-attack DPS per 14 attack power like player characters.
  • The scaling formulas for hit are not yet available, however the patch 3.2.0 notes state that "If a player is at their appropriate spell hit chance or hit chance maximum, their pet will be at the maximum for spell hit chance, hit chance, and expertise. If they are below the maximum, their pet will be proportionately below those maximums.".[1]
  • Minions gain less health and mana from stamina and intellect than player characters. Minions only gain 1 mana per point of base intellect, and do not gain any health from their base stamina. Different minions gain different amounts of health per point of bonus stamina, and different amounts of mana per point of bonus intellect:

Gender

In a future patch, it's been planned by the Blizzard artists to create genders for all warlock minions. Warlocks will also be given the choice of which they'd would like.

I'm happy to share we actually do have plans for offering players a choice between male and female versions of all warlock demons. This is a task already in our system, though I don't have a time frame for you at the moment. Other art tasks could always take precedence, but we're committed to making this happen. :)

We haven't forgotten about this - however, when it comes down to getting a cool, new race for Mists or getting a Femguard model - we need to make the right choices for the whole game.

Notes

  • Each minion has its own randomly generated name.
  • New names for minions can be randomly generated by visiting a demon trainer, found near warlock trainers. For 50g, demon trainers will dispose of your chosen minion, allowing you to summon a new one, with a freshly generated name.
  • Minions' names are generated either upon the creation of the warlock, or upon the first summoning of the minion, and are not determined by character name, race or gender. Deleting and re-creating an identical warlock will lead to new minion names, and is a cheap way for new warlocks to change the name of their Imp should they particularly dislike it.

Patches and hotfixes

  • Legion Patch 7.0.3 (2016-07-19): Summoning a warlock minion now cost 1 Soul Shard instead of mana.
  • Hotfix (2016-07-21): "Fixed a bug affecting the health of Warlock pets."
  • Cataclysm Patch 4.0.1 (2010-10-12): All Warlocks now start with an Imp and do not need to train them as a spell. Also, Doomguard and Infernal now function as guardians, and may be used along with other demonic pets.
